Anyone else sing better while playing guitar?
I recently covered a song, spur of the moment. I didnt really want to track everything temperately, so i just placed one condenser mic by my guitar, and the other so I could sing. I recorded the song in a few takes, but I was really surprised how good it came out. I can seriously say I like it better than when I track my acoustic alone then I sing over it. Of course I wasn't able to pan the acoustic, just 2 tracks both in the middle. I didnt use any pitch correction, and everything sounded so good and in place. does this happen to anyone else?

Sometimes yeah and sometimes no. Best results for me are still to dub over...sing a rough lead...once the rough lead vocal is there I'm a lot more comfortable to sing over it, then delete the original. I'm continuing the research.

Yes. Synchronicity helps make it all seem more relaxed and natural and fun.

I often sing or hum while I play guitar but it's usually just like scatting along like a lot of Jazz musicians do. I'll sometimes harmonize like Benson does.

mike_mccue Yes. Synchronicity helps make it all seem more relaxed and natural and fun. Mike said it very well. Many times there is an emotion captured that may or may not be able to be done separately. Also you "hear" things differently that way such as the bleed from the real time instrument and room in a since having a larger sound (or should I say more "all around". As "Mike" refers to anything that can enhance such things as feeling, expression, being relaxed etc will in many cases will be that needed formula. Often times its just whatever works for the person. Some of my (to me) best takes have been from just plugging in the mic and go for it. I person sent me a song to more or less demo. (me do all the parts). I laid a low cost condenser mic on the desk (no stand) just to do some acoustic scratch tracks. I ended up (keeping) that take. Maybe I was more relaxed and had no pressure so I played better. Maybe that's your (the op's) case.

+1 For the relaxed performance. Many feel naked without a guitar in their hand. Like Jimmy inferred, I would prefer recording a good performance in suboptimal conditions than a bad performance in optimal conditions. Your performance is what's captured when the Red Button is pushed. You need to be comfortable with your performance ...

On the rare occasions I do sing, I find it much easier just to concentrate on that and not having to worry about playing at the same time. Besides, I need as clean a vocal track as possible for extensive V-Vocal work afterwards.

A lot of the time I think you get into the rhythm of the song better when singing while playing. On a related note: when I had to give speeches in various classes, I'd talk the prof into letting me strap on my guitar for the speech, simply because, in front of a crowd, I feel more comfortable with a guitar in my hands

If it's just going to be an acoustic guitar/vocal, this method works well for alot folks. However, things can get a little dicey when you want to add a percussion part, as its the rare player that can keep the timing solid enough for a drummer to add a later track that will sound natural. Its a good idea to try and do these impromptu sessions with a click track going just to keep you "on time" so to speak. Randy Randy

I'm an excellent singer when singing with the radio or CD's....I know because my wife always smiles...I do get surprised about how good I sound and I guess I get a funny look about it because she usually laughs too.

Yes, absolutely. I rough out song ideas with just one condenser picking up my acoustic and vocals. And I'm suprised at how much better the vocals sound. Like others said, you're relaxed and vibing. But when you're doing just vocals, it's all serious, and it seems like you could sing it 100 different ways, and you can. Takes practice I suppose, and mixing techniques as well.

I used to (when I was younger), but now it's the other way around: I sing better if not playing.

For me, it really depends on how complex the guitar part is...Most of the time a scratch vocal and guitar track will eventually be replaced by single tracks of each...I typically prefer concentrating on one part at a time...Just depends on the mood I'm in and the song I'm doing...
