Anyone having any trouble with Kontakt and X1 x64?
Hi everyone, I posted a few messages here and there on the forum about my problems with track templates and X1. I've sort of narrowed a few things down which I'll explain, but also wanted to know if any of you can reproduce any of this? Before I get to the "how to repro" part, let me tell you what the issue was, is and what I've done to remedy for now. My old track templates for drums using Kontakt, or any module that uses Kontakt, would not load up in X1 at all. The templates were made in 8.5 and once they were brought into X1 32 bit, they would just totally shut down Sonar showing me my desktop. This happened religiously every time. The same template used in X1 x64, and it would just sit there with the little circle spinning on my cursor like the old Windows hourglass. However, if I brought this track template in without any other tracks recorded, and it was the first thing I brought in, it would load up and work every time in X1 32. ba midi had posted a thread talking about re-creating track templates which made me want to try this. So I re-created this drum template and brought it into X1 32 with the project already started. Remember, before I couldn't do this...the template needed to be the first thing brought in before any other tracks or plugs were brought in. So this time, I bring in this template with recorded tracks and plugs, and it works fine. Save it, it saves, close program, reopen, all is well. So it appears I needed to create a new track template (mind you, this is an instrument track template, not a project template) in order for X1 to see it without any problems. So I go to try this same thing in X1 x64. It will not even load up. I get the little circle thing spinning on my cursor, and nothing happens. I have to close out of Sonar. It doesn't matter if I try to bring this in before a project has started or after, it just will not load up anything in 64. I have the latest Kontakt update, my .dll's are all in the right places and I've checked everything I can possible check. Now...here's where it gets weird. I decided to recreate the template in X1 x64 instead of trying to bring it in as a track template.. So I did it the normal way...go to synth rack, tell it to bring in Kontakt 16 out, tell it to give me all mono tracks, it brings it in, I get my tracks, I load up some drum sounds in Kontakt and everything is as it should be. It works perfectly....until I try to save the project. I get the spinning circle just like I did when I tried to import this track template and it won't save the project. So, to see what other trouble I could get into, I re-open 64, recreate the track template again. This time, I try to save just the template. I try to save, little circle again. I just can't make Kontakt work inside X1 64...when I do, I can't save it. Has anyone else experienced this? I'm not doing anything crazy in my drum template other than bringing in a UAD Transient Designer on my snare track. I even deleted that from the template and tried with no plugs and I still get the same thing, so it's not a plugin issue. I'm not doing anything wrong from what I can tell, and this just seems to be an X1 x64 issue. Anyone else? Thanks.

Hi Danny, I take it you mean Export a track template not save. I was able to follow your recipe with Kontakt 16 out and was able to export and then reload the track template into a new project with no data as well as a previously created project with data in it. It worked fine and KONTAKT worked properly. I was also able to save the project into which I loaded the track template.

Hi Danni, Just tried to repro here and couldn't. I opened K4 (all mono outs) and loaded up Jet City Drums, saved the project, saved as a project template and saved as a track template. All worked and all loaded up fine after. Wish I could think of something to suggest trying, but I'm just not sure. Yeah, not tremendously helpful....sorry. Good luck Dean

A few further tests. I was able to insert track templates created iin SONAR 8.5.3 without any problem either. I went back to 8.5.3 and did the same experiment loading s8 track templates into an X1 project and it all worked fine. this is the most useful stuff I've gotten out of X1. It's pretty much useless for working with.

your problem doesn't sound like it's something that would be resolved by Kontakt updates, but just to be sure, which version of Kontakt do you have running? 4.2.2.something is the latest version. just to clarify - I know in your OP you said you have the "latest updates" but I had a problem with the NI service center telling me that I had the latest updates as well for kontakt, but it was on 4.1, not 4.2.

Hi Mike: Thanks for the reply. No, it wasn't an export, it's a "save as instrument track" template. You know, get your stuff all set up and right click on a track number in edit view, save as instrument template....that's what I tried to do. But if it's working on your end, I got a problem somewhere. I just wish I knew what the deal was. Thanks for trying it though, much appreciated. Hi Razor: Thanks for trying it and for the reply. You're tremendously helpful because you at least tried it for me...thanks for that. :) Hi Reece, thanks very much. I have the 4.2.2 version yeah, and the NI service center updated itself before the update. It was reading I needed 4.2.2 before it did that though, so I think I'm ok as far as that goes. I had like 4.0 something before this update...and that was doing the exact same thing. I was hoping this would have helped but it didn't. Thanks for the suggestion though. I'm going to try and narrow down if it is a particular module inside of Kontakt. I have a few different things....Abbey Road Drums and Alicia's Keys both crapped out on me the same way. I'll try some of the others and see what the deal is. Ah one other thing I noticed. When Sonar 64 hangs and I close it, some teleport server is still locked in task manager that I manually close every time this happens. Again though, it's only in x64 where it does this stuff. Sonar 32 seems fine and Sonar 8.5 32 and 64 are all fine with the old templates and even the new ones. I just get a warning message that "the template was authored using a different version of Sonar" message, but they work fine there. Thanks again for all your replies, everyone. :)

Gotta be something on my end then. I just wish I knew where it was or where to begin. I guess I could try un-installing Kontakt, but I did that to install the latest version. I totally removed it from my registry as well. If this problem was happening to any of you guys, where would you begin?

The reason I asked Danny is that you mentioned something about a teleport server being stuck open and that sounds to me like a bitbridge issue if you where using 32 bit Kontakt. Maybe you have 64 bit Kontakt installed but it's defaulting to the 32 bit one when you load it up.

The .dll's are in the right place and are showing up via plugin manager too, Andy. My 64 is in the program files\cake folder and the other is in the x86 folder where it should be. When I checked plugin manager in 64, I only have the 64 bit version in my manually created plug list. So I don't know what to do at this point. Thanks for your response. :)

No problems passing 5GB RAM with SONAR X1 x64 and Kontakt 4... Sometimes loading patches in Kontakt 4 hold up... mouse lock...wait then load... no crashes just unstable experience.

The teleport server is BitBridge. I get "the teleport server has stopped working" dialogs quite frequently. I suppose it means one of your VSTs has crapped out.

If I load it in synth rack without using my template Freddie, I don't even get a hold up. It loads up fine, works fine. I just can't save...it's so weird. Ok, so we know it's definitely a problem on my end in some way. If you guys were me having this issue, what would you try to do to remedy the problem? Any suggestions? Incidentally, I've tried every softsynth I own in 64 and all of them work perfectly with instrument templates as well as saving. It's something about Kontakt for me and 64 bit X1. What it is, I don't have a clue. Thanks for your help everyone. If you happen to come up with any suggestions, I'll try anything. :)

Yeah that's what I thought as well olpal. You know what I'm going to try...just for the heck of it....I'm going to try and use J-Bridge with it to see if it makes any difference. That's the only thing I haven't tried yet.

Hi Danny, save your old track templates using \file\save as...template, then open it \file\open\template or just double click the file. I hope it help!

Opened the Sonar project (opened without problems)

Opened the Sonar project (opened without problems) Hi Jim, and thanks for that. Much appreciated. All the stuff you mentioned there is exactly what I CAN'T do here. The past few update versions of Kontakt have been weird for me. Each time I have tried to update, it would go through the motions and try to uninstall the previous version on it's own with the install. Each time, I'd get a warning message that said "unable to uninstall the previous version you must uninstall manually and install using Kontakt exe.msi". None of the installs from them are labeled .msi. This has happened to me at least 3 times. When I went to uinstall from control panel, I kept getting "an unknown error has occurred." I did some reading on their site and they recommend this Windows removal tool from Microsoft. I grabbed that, it got it off my system. I then went into my registry and made sure anything with Kontakt 4 in it was removed. The Windows removal tool did a great job getting most of this stuff as the last time I had to remove Kontakt from my registry, it took me an hour. Whatever this problem is, I don't know what more I can do about it. If you uninstall something, delete all folders and the registry to the best of your ability and it still gives you issues, what else could I try? I sent NI an email as well, but they just replied with an auto-responder that took over 2 months. By the time they responded, I figured out how to get the old version off my system. So where would you start if you were having this problem? Thanks for trying things for me.

Hey Danny, First, I'd try a full/manual uninstall of Kontakt 4... then install from the DVD and update to 4.2.2 FWIW, I've had to do these kinds of things a couple of times. ie: The latest GuitarRig update (v4.1.2) failed to install. I had to uninstall (full manual removal), then install and update to the latest version. If that fails to resolve the issue, I'd use the same basic proceedure with Sonar. - Uninstall via Programs and Features
- Delete all Sonar related folders
- In the registry under HKey Current User>Software>Cakewalk Music Software... remove the Sonar X1 key
- In the registry under HKey Local Machine>Software>Cakewalk Music Software... remove the Sonar X1 key
- Uninstall all C++ runtime entries via Programs and Features
- Reinstall Sonar X1
- Patch Sonar to X1B (I'd do this before opening Sonar)
You're welcome to give me a call tomorrow... and I can step you thru the registry entries to delete. It won't take an hour... just a couple of minutes tops

Thanks so much Jim. I'll try the Kontakt thing first and see how I make out with that. I'd really hate to uninstall Sonar as it seems to be fine for me other than this issue with 64. I only use Sonar 64 for intense synth type stuff as of now because this box you built me is just sick enough using 32 bit. :) Thanks for the offer and your help with this. I'll see how things go and try my best not to bother you. Thanks!

Thanks Zo, much appreciated. Yeah I was using 4.0 when I started using X1. I was hoping the update to 4.2 would help me out. It works fine in Sonar X1 32 bit, it's just 64 that seems to be giving me issues.
