Anyone running two monitors in a vertical situation?
Hi all, For years and years I ran two monitors (and even three at one point) but a few years back I bought a desk for my studio that didn't allow two monitors to fit between the near-fields. I have a 28" Dell running 2560x1440 which I just love. However, Amplitube and various plugins seem to be getting smaller and smaller each year and I struggle to move little knobs and read settings. I'm thinking of going out to Best Buy today and picking up a 40" or 46" 1080p Hi-def TV and mounting it above my primary display. Would be fun to play games on too. :) However, I'm wondering if this will be a pain in the neck (literally) to have look up to see the display. My thought would be to have the console on my primary display because I can see so many tracks in high resolution, but to have the track view on the top monitor. Whenever a plugin was a challenge to see, I would just drag it to the top monitor where it would pretty much be life size. So, I would love to hear your experience if you've used such a set-up. Also, I want 46" but my wife is using logic on me (dang it) that 40" is better for this. So talk me into (or out of I guess) the size. :)

The amount of neck pain will depend on how high you mount the screen, so I say keep it as low as you can. If I had the room I would use 2 monitors of the same size, side by side. But I don't. I have one 24" desk monitor for the desktop system which is raised about 8" from the top of the desk.. Lately I've been using a 17" laptop for everything. It fits nicely underneath the 24" monitor and seems to work well in a vertical situation without any neck issues.

I have a 27 inch monitor on the desk and a 40 inch TV on a shelf above the 27 and further back. It takes some getting used to moving the mouse to the right to get it to the top monitor. I will say Sonar looks pretty good on the TV, however text items are a bit hazy, even more so on web pages such as this forum.

smallstone, I have two 19" monitors side by side with a 24" on top of those. This works OK but after a few hours, it does lead to a stiff neck. I think a bigger top monitor would not be a good solution. Go with the touch.

Sixfinger, Go into Windows display settings where you see the monitor positions displayed as rectangles labeled 1 and 2. Drag the big one on top of the smaller one rather than side by side. This will fix your mouse behavior so you can move the mouse vertically.

Thanks all. I went and picked up an Asus 23" touch monitor and I have it on my desk next to my Mackie Control Pro. I can now open the plugins on this baby and set their parameters by touch. Having a lot of fun, and didn't need to figure out how to mount a 46" beast on the wall! :)

I have four 19" 5:4 ratio 1280x1024 Dell monitors in a 2-up 2-down arrangement. Track View permanently spans the top 2 screens while CV, PRV or some combination of other view windows or docked GUIs occupy the lower screens, depending on which screenset is selected. If I could afford it, I would replace this with 2 ultra-wide screens, one above the other. Four separate screens suited me better when I was using Sonar 7, i.e. before the advent of screensets.

I taught in a college that had desks I have never seen before or since that were very slick. They had glass tops and had CRT monitors under them at a 45 degree up angle. Would not work for touch but was a neat way to save space and neck strain.
As alluded to above the height will play a lot into comfort, but mounting options would allow for the console feel with a touch screen.

I have tried two monitors before, but the problem is that unless one is directly in front, you will always be twisting to the side. So I have three monitors. A good solution with two monitors would be one one top the other with a custom stand. Set the resolution of the top one to low so you can adjust your tiny plugs.

+1 on the size of the knobs and text on VSTs. I have the resolution on my 2nd monitor set to a lower value so I can see and use VSTs with ease. Developers have got to start thinking about resizable UIs. A lot of the VSTs look like they were designed for 800x600 screens. My poor eyes!

I tried vertical monitors once years ago and I developed a crick in my neck. I was in horrible pain. I put them horizontal and the crick went away. :)

Using a 30" DELL U3011 2560x1600 with 2 x 20" NEC 2080UX 1200x1600 (portrait) along either side of the Dell, with the monitors above the screen "wall" pointing towards me.
Perfect for me, arrangement (huge) in the middle, mixer to the right with enough vertical room (1600px) to cover everything and a "plugin screen", while tracking, or the mixer in the middle while mixing. Perfect for any DAW i work with. It's essential to for me to mouse work horizontally and have the same vertical resolution on each screen. Can't imagine putting screens on top of that screen "wall"...

the 2nd monitor below is working great. The touchscreen is so useful I'm selling my Mackie Control Universal Pro. :) Still, I now have visions of that large TV up on the wall...
