Anyone tried Tascam FW 1884 on Win 10?

I am getting one to use mainly as a controller, and maybe as extra inputs into my RME via adat. Have heard about people getting it to work in Win 10, but curious if any of you use it with SONAR with any luck.
All the best.

^^ This is what I do in Win 7 which works fine ^^

IIRC someone else did and it supposedly works.

My plan is to got WIN 10 on the DAW over Thanksgiving weekend. We'll see.

Thanks for answering, Ed. Did you have any troubles setting it up? Anything I should be aware of? It will be my first controller of that kind.

Mainly you need to install the "legacy" firewire drivers.

Win 10 may try to install the modern up to date drivers. Under Win 7 is was a no brainer to install the legacy driver.

Thanks for the heads up. Will double check that I use the legacy drivers, and not "the new fancy stuff" Will hopefully have it here during the first part this coming week. Will probably ask more when the time comes. Looking forwards to it
Thank you for your insight so far, Ed.

It's not a question of using the "new fancy" Windows 10 driver.   The legacy Firewire driver is needed because Windows dropped support for Firewire in Windows 8.  You have to find a Firewire driver from Windows 7 (that's the 'legacy' part).  There is a lot more to it, and many of us gave up.  I did, and I'm a retired comp. sci. prof who is very comfortable with operating systems and drivers.  Drivers for this Tascam were written by Frontier Design, who hasn't been heard from since about 2010.  Tascam dropped support for these just after releasing a 64-bit driver for Windows 7 (but not 64-bit for Macs).  All this accounts for why you see these units for sale, and why many users said they would not buy from Tascam again.  I understand that Tascam is writing their own drivers now for new equipment, but that doesn't help us who have a great piece of equipment going unused.

    Zarggy,

Did you upgrade to Win 10 from Win 7?

If so it might be easier to revert (if you did not delete the revert files). Get the Tascam drivers and legacy firewire driver working in 7 and then re-upgrade to Win 10.

Or you could wait to see if that works for me when I upgrade to Win 10 over Thanksgiving.

If for me (since I have my FW-1884 working in Win 7) Win 10 fails I will revert back to 7 until such time that I can afford a Berhinger X-Touch.

If it works with Win 8.1, it should work with Win 10.
MS released a signed legacy Firewire driver for win8/8.1 after 18 months or so of user complaints. I have used this after upgrading my PC and installing win 8.1. I suggest using this rather than the Win 7 Firewire driver if the provided Win 10 Firewire driver does not work.
    You can D/L it here.
    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2970191
If you use the W7 firewire driver in W8.1 x64, you have to run Win 8.1 in the "Driver evaluation mode" since the W7 is not properly signed . This is not necessary with the newer Win 8.1 driver.
However, I read somewhere (Cubase forum ?) that Win 10 contains the legacy driver  AND it works with FW-1884.
As far as the Tascam/Sonar driver(s), with win 8.1, I had to install in compatability mode for W7 and I assume this will be necessary for W10 as well.
I have a new SSD intended for dual boot win10/7 on my old studio PC just for evaluation. I just need to download and install. If all goes well, I can move that box back to the studio and give it a try with the FW-1884. But like Bapu, that may not happen until the holiday.

If I did not need a Win 10 PC for work purposes, I am not sure that I would upgrade any of my PCs (2 desktops, 3 laptops on W8.1) until I absolutely must. I am very happy with Win 8.1 and unless I see some performance improvement with Sonar/Cubase on Win 10, I would probably stick with 8.1 (on my studio PC at least).

Hi, and thanks for sharing. I read, and have saved the Deering Amps (Tascam SONAR x1) page for future references. The bit about the new fancy drivers was a poorly attempt of being humoristic (sorry).
I will be using it as a control surface, and hope that I will get it working.

Hi, and thanks for your feedback. Win 10 installed legacy drivers for my FW card automatically. I really hope that the 1.22 x64 SONAR plugin driver for the FW 1884 will work in compatibility mode in Win 10. After upgrading my laptop from Win 8.1, to Win 10, I just felt more comfortable afterwards. I then (on a whim) did a clean install on my studio pc, and it has been flawless ever since. Did not take into account that I would be getting the FW 1884...
I am hopefully just a few days from knowing one way or the other.

YOu have to download a patch from Win 8.   Search for it and you'll find it.   It not that straightforward and I know for a fact it won;t work out of the box.  I have FW 1884 and Win 10 did not have any legacy drivers for FW.  YOu need to get them from microsoft knowledge base and its a win 8 patch that works with 10

Hi, and thanks for your feedback. Win 10 automatically installed the legacy drivers for my TI Firewire card, the moment I started my pc up after putting it in. Went straight to Device Manager to see, and there was the Legacy drivers for my FW card. I will however be cautious when setting it up. I also have downloaded the SONAR plugin, the firmware update and the drivers themselves. I will hopefully have it here in a couple of days, and know for sure.

Yeah!! I have it up and running Tried it on a couple of existing projects, and started some new ones. I have a long way until I have it all figured out (feature wise), but I am smiling from ear to ear I will basically use it as a (volume and hopefully more) controller, and so far I am very pleased.
    Thanks for chiming in, guys

following this process, i found that I needed to firstly run the fw1884.exe to put the installers on to the hard drive

then I needed to open the sound control panel and moving through to drivers, manually install the drivers from the location on the hard drive before it worked.

one step missing from the above, but it is now working thanks to some lateral thinking (need to manually install the drivers after installing to the drive with a fail to install because the drivers will not work in win 10)

My FW1884 is still going strong. I am only using it as a Control Surface.
I have a copy of the Legacy FW driver needed, just in case Win decides to wreck it.
    It haven't happened yet

Geez, I'm running some FW Motu's on a bog-standard Win10 machine with an aftermarket FW card a I never had to install no steenkin' "legacy" driver...

possibly because motu is keeping their drivers up to date unlike tascam

getting the fw1884 to work is only one step within many of tricking out this "new" old machine (Dell t7500)

currently in the process of dealing with reason 10's new method for initial authorisation (you cannot activate your ignition key until you run it once via internet authorisation, even if you never want to do that again) and downloading another 7GB of content that they do not ship with the installers SMH at some companies arrogance
