Anyone use a cabinet simulator on non-guitar sources?
I saw (but lost the link to) a video where I guy was using Fractal's CabLab VST to run a cabinet simulator on a synth. I thought that was very interesting...

Audio FX chains can be created in any VST that has the capability. Amp Sims are common for having a truckload of FX under the hood so can make presets of pretty much anything.
Converse is also true to send a guitar track through synths that support audio in (i.e., can be inserted as an audio FX).
ASUS ROG Maximus X Hero (Wi-Fi AC), i7-8700k, 16GB RAM, GTX-1070Ti, Win 10 Pro, Saffire PRO 24 DSP, A-300 PRO, plus numerous gadgets and gizmos that make or manipulate sound in some way.

Hi there, I'm not talking amp or effects here, just a cabinet simulator. I would think it would just act like an EQ device...

I don't. Kitchens are "non-guitar sources" I think... Not sure about cabinets per se but there's a plethora of Kitchen and room design options out there: Lowes has a nifty design tool. Home Depot, Better Homes and others have similar options. But anyway, I think many effect sims also have cabinet sims too.

I use them on EPs. But that's hardly radical, being not far from a guitar application. I can't imagine what benefit there'd be using one with a synth, unless that combination just by chance happened to accidentally result in some pleasant EQ. Which is really what a speaker sim mainly does - it's a complex filter.

yeah Bit that was exactly my take on it as well. I recall in the video is the guy just kept clicking through IRs until he had one that sounded good to him, and then mixed from there.

Vocals are good through amp aims too. Video killed the radio star springs to mind. Or even some none inch nails songs.

Could be "Wear and Pace".

I have messed around with Amplitube and TH3 on synth sources, with some interesting results. But I think one of my favorites is running a synth through a Leslie cabinet simulator! Break the rules, think outside the box!!!

I use a cabinet sim on a cleanly played and recorded harmonica when it wants to have more of the "Blues harp" type of sound. I'll usually throw in a touch of amp distortion and roll off the highs and slightly boost the lower mids. The free Voxengo "Boogex" amp and speaker simulator vst is perfect for this: http://www.voxengo.com/product/boogex/

This post is the winner! I just ordered the VST version of Cab-Lab to play with (I have the stand alone and a ton of IRs). :)

It can definitely yield some interesting results. You can also use IRs from different places like, the insides of boxes or synthetically made IRs. I believe spitfire audios new synth is based off of this.

cool thanks! I actually own a bunch of IRs I bought for my Fractal. I'm going to play around with some sound sources and various cabinets...
