Anyone use a laptop and a desktop with X1?
What things do you do on the laptop and then what things do you do on the desktop? Thinking of picking up a decent laptop for tracking purposes and be mobile if necessary.

The desktop studio is for recording and main composition. The laptop is for editing and idea creation while out an' about. I wanna try location recording with the laptop but need a mobile interface first. Eventually I wanna rack setup that'll work both places. The minivan makes a good/quiet sound booth and is roomy enough for a guitar or two.

Recently, I've switched my main setup to my Rain Livebook i7 4 cores (8threads) and am using the Gigabit port to stream audio/midi to Vienna Ensemble Pro 5/MIR24 to and from my Desktop Core2Quad. You can also run VSTs or any Synth in veinna ensemble. (desktop power doesn't go to waste there that way) I've found myself just running VEP5/MIR24 on the laptop with sonar as well. (Double maintenance sucks, but redundancy is vital)then there's the dongles (ilok, elisencser, NI registrations) I like having the laptop for Crash report sending to Sonar... turn on wi-fi long enough to send. Also, Rain computers come with a Virtual PC (called Rainzone) you can surf the web Virtually without worry of audio computer. Close rainzone and anything you picked up vanishes. You have a shared disk for safe downloads. After seeing my laptop I set up a virtual PC for my desktop too.

Why use both? Maybe its just me I always preferred to have 1 rig that I can keep everything on personally. That said I work on just 1 laptop best of both worlds

Laptop: Tascam 1804/M-Audio Octane rack for all portable/onsite tracking with headphones. Presonus Inspire for headphone editing, or one on one office sessions with clients. ...... Desktop: Tascam FW1884 & with Adam A7's and dual video monitors for everything else. I have two WD Passports USB drives (500 gig & 1 TB) that house my Cakewalk Projects folders. These are backed up to a 2TB drive on my desktop FREQUENTLY and insure that whichever system I'm sitting at, I'm working on the most current data.

Laptop for live on location recording, bands, chiors, concerts. Playback of backing tracks at gigs. Desktop for all editing , overdubs and working with singer songwriters. Everything I ever recorded is in there. ( somewhere?) Why 2?? My attic is to small for a whole band so the laptop gives me the portability. But the laptop also belongs to my wife as my original Acer died last fall. I have a netbook I use for playback and 2 track recording ( Wavelab) The desktop can hold massive hardware stuff like faster hard drives and they are cheaper to hot rod. You gotta have 2 monitors etc. If I was only to have one it would be the laptop as most of my paid recording is done on location. PS - my wifes Lenova Think pad i5 works better than anything I have ever used before . I did not even have to tweek it. DPCLAT under 50ms steady as a rock with the WiFI ON.

The big issue is to keep them synchronise in data (to have all the same software , upadtes , projects version ect ..)) I use SyncToy2.1 to sync my PC and laptop however if the paths on the two computers are not identical, Plugins, samples, etc. may not be found and causes problems. Any better ideas?
