Anyone using Andy John's Kit 1 with SD3?

It's on special for $20 and the demo vid makes it sound really good for the type of work I'd be doing. Any thoughts? Is it really that nice sounding?

    Hey, Beepster -

Yes, I really like the AJ kit, even more than the Ocean Way freebie I got when I bought Producer.
Of course, I usually tweak it heavily (tunings, placement, etc) for each project I use it on, but it is a good-sounding acoustic kit.
I always run seperate outputs to individual tracks so I can process everything seperately, but I would do that with ANY kit.
    It's definitely worth $20!

Thanks, OlSkoolGuy. Definitely just looking for a good starter sound to tweak out for various styles. I've been using the Zep kit and it is quite nice but IMO Bonham's sound is just that. Bonham's sound and I don't think it would be easily tweaked out for different styles. I don't really like the cymbals on that one either. The Andy John cymbals sound much more like what I'm used to. Just gonna double check it didn't come with the Suite already and then I think I'm gonna go for it. I was considering the Acoustic Drums pack but when I listened to the demo it sounded like an electronic kit. Very strange. Still kicking myself for missing out on the $20 Peart kit special but maybe it will drop in price again on day. Cheers.

This thread got a lot of views very quickly so I edited the title to show the special price. Might generate a few more sales for the Cakesters. Thanks all.

i think the sizzle kit is auesome..i too seen the AJ kit but hesitated because its only a few drums that make up the kit.i figure even for 20 bucks i like to get a few different sets, not just the one.

but i fine tune sessin drummer so much that i make it my kits after awhile.
i have a kit i call "chucks miX breed".

thats the thing i really like about sd3.its so easy and tweaks up nicely.

Hiya, Chuck. How are ya? I'll have to take a look at the sizzle kit. I too will end up likely creating all sorts of Frankenkits in the future. My main interest in this kit is the snare, kick and cymbals. The toms aren't exactly what I want (a little floppy sounding to my ears... I prefer a tight tom sound) but I'm sure I can tweak them or just swap them out. One thing that weirds me out about SD3 is the GUI doesn't seem to allow for creating huge kits but I guess that doesn't matter when using PRV or the Step Sequencer... I hope. Cheers, dude.

Just replace the cymbals. Right-click on any piece in the kit and Load Instrument. You can use the cymbals from any other kit.

@SToons... Yeah, I know. Just haven't bothered yet and I have a feeling I won't find the exact cymbal sound I want with the included content. I'm probably gonna take a close look at SD3 again tonight. I have so many different aspects of Sonar I'm trying get through my skull once I get something working reasonably I move on to something else. Now that I have a rough idea of all the tools I NEED to make stuff happen I can now go back and explore them all further. Actually I'll probably try the MIDI drum recording method you suggested about a week ago. I should go find that thread again. Cheers.

i think the sizzle kit is auesome

You mean you like the  2/5 or 3/5 of the kit that functions? Think of how awesome if would sound if it were -fixed- as the Old Zep was since the Dry Sizzle kit, incidentally, is the one other kit that's messed up in the Slate kits provided to users. Even Cakewalk has admitted the problem (see release notes for Producer 8.5.2 - the problem has still not been fixed. Are you starting to understand yet?).

For what it's worth, the Dry kits are messed up worse, the wet kits sound 'OK' although they're not, it's just that the wet snare samples mask the issue with the dry samples whereas the dry samples have nothing to mask the problems. The dynamic response and useable range are also messed up. Learn to use the SFZ file and you can control a whole heck of a lot more such as the wet/dry mix. You can barely tweak anything from Session Drummers' interface.

Your dissatisfaction with session drummer is glaringly apparent so you might be interested in FXpansions BFD Eco sale + platinum samples rock legends thrown in for a mere $49.

Whilst Eco is a lesser version of BFD2 you should find it heavenly compared to session drummer and it's a great introduction to the BFD ethos.

I'm confused, I just got an email today and it says $49 on the link provided in the email  Here but I don't see anything about the free rock legends but I'm guessing you'll get a serial and download link once you've bought Eco.
If I go to their site via a google search it's listed at $99, can't see it listed at $39 though.
    Even more confusing

Edit. Ignore the $99 I was looking at Etch

It's on special for $20 and the demo vid makes it sound really good for the type of work I'd be doing. Any thoughts? Is it really that nice sounding?

Hmmm... in the UK store it is listed at £29.

US $20 equates to around GBP £13. Or are you not in North America Beep?

Don't get me wrong, I mean, £29 ain't breaking the bank, but why is it so much more expensive in the UK store?

I watched the vid... sounds great, and I'm tempted.

I am also interested in twaddle's BFD Eco recommendation too... dammit! I'm spending more time buying stuff and then not actually using it, yet...

The price is back up because Cake was running a JUNE special, and June is over. They began the sale on June 22nd and plainly stated that the special pricing would expire June 30th.

Don't waste your money on session drummer, waste it on Eco and the free Rock Legends kit instead
The rock legends kit retails for $59 on platinums site so that & Eco combined together makes it a damn good deal when you think about it.
It's almost as if they are paying you $10 to take it off their hands.
Listening to the demo's of both rock legends and andy johns kit for session drummer I know where my money would go and given the lengthy threads on session drummers inept functionality and flexibility I hardly need say more

    Re:Anyone using Andy John's Kit 1 with SD3? It's on special for $20. 2012/07/05 18:35:32 (permalink)
@twaddle... I'm a really broke ass dude so it can be very limiting. Gotta snage deals on stuff that I KNOW will be useful to me when I can. It's a crappy way to operate but I ain't got no choice. Eventually BFD2 full will be in my toolbox but not for a while. SD3 seems to do what I need for now and this kit will be a welcome addition.
