I've owned the Layla 3G for many years.  From the Echo website, the unit looks the same on the outside, but I don't know if they have changed it in any way since I bought mine.

Good:  Drivers, Quality, 8 in/8 out, PCI interface, works beautifully with Sonar.

Not So Good: Only 2 microphone inputs, headphone out only works with the 1/2 output, volume knobs on the front for headphone and inputs are a little difficult to work with.

Overall, it's a good basic unit, though the price back when I got it was perhaps a little high for its feature set.

Works fine in SONAR 8.5.3 and X1 here.

I switched to SONAR after the Layla3G failed to work with the latest version of Cubase and neither Steinberg or Echo looked like they were going to fix it.

    Works flawlessy in SONAR

    SONAR Platypus on Win10 64bit.
Studio One Pro / Cubase Pro 9.5...just in case.

OK-I don't need the mi preamps or the headphones-I use an external mixer to monitor-works good for me. I have been searching for a couple months now-go back and forth between USB and PCI. I want to stay with PCI. My great deal isn't as great as thought, but still nice-$400. I looked at the RME 9632 but I like the idea of a breakoput box. Also I get all the ins\outs I need without spending extra $$. I cannot afford the MOTU with breakout boxes.
Thanks very much for the replies

Remember I am in a home studio and the only player. I use a mackie1202vlz3 (the newer mackie mixers) It has direct out on the 1st four channels-They are after gain and lo cut filter but before "everything" else. So it's very clean. I have an AxeFX Ultra for my guitars-stereo=ch1&2. The mackie has many routing options for what it is. I have an original Studio Projects C1 large diaphram mic-new ones don't come close-IMHO. At the moment I have 2 AP2496's synced but am about to buy-most likely the layla3g.
The mic pres in the VLZ3 are fine-better than the FTU I had for a week. I use the heasdphones out of the mixer to record (monitor) vocals. An fx loop in the mackie with external FX (alesisi, Lexicon, etc) I record the voals dry of course but I like the monitor real wet. Works well for me. Sometimes I record the vocals with guitar only, sometimes drums only and sometimes everything.
I use Audio Technica ATH-M50's-recommended here (well the 853 forum) They are great.
The routing on the mackie VLZ3 is what allows me to monitor with zero latency and crank whatever I want to hear most (or less)
I am a player from way back-but I love recording my own stuff and without this forum I would probably be using a tape player :-)

    Hi stratman

    Buy it.

-> along with RME, EchoAudio's drivers are the best and most stable low latency drivers in the biz
-> had one for years - only sold it to get the RME FireFace UC

In a properly configured x64 Windows 7 DAW running Sonar x64  [ 8.5.3 - I never used it with X1 ]  the card is virtually uncrashable even when running massive CPU loads at  32 Sample Buffers - yes, it is that rock-solid !!!
