Anyone using X3D with a Touchscreen Monitor?
Maybe the subject has been covered. Are you digging it? I just bought a new Windows 8.1 PC with an Intel i7-4770K processer and 16 Gig of memory. It pretty much rocks. I'm thinking of pulling the trigger on a touchscreen monitor but wanted to get thoughts from anyone who's using one. So the pluses and minuses would be appreciated!

I'd say the VS700 is a pretty hands on unit. Maybe to touch some EQ here or there? Working with lesser screen estate means I can work longer hours and less wear on the eyes... If you can buy a screen and you have the room.... go... The implementation in Sonar is very well done. And on YouTube you can find some great examples. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CoJ4nkImR9o

I tried (and failed) testing touch screen at a time when the X series is not officially supporting touch screen yet, and on Win 7, a bad combination. With current X3 and Win 8 - most issues I encountered is now solved. I still have some issues that I'm not sure if it's still a problem, hoping someone with touch screen / X3 / Win 8 can check and verify these : Step sequencer - you can enter a note, but can you delete it using touch ? On a 21.5" (and smaller) monitor, the console fader is too small for touch mixing to be effective (your finger will cover it). On larger monitor (30" and above) - the fader may seems larger, but such large monitors are meant to be placed further - is it practical to touch-mix with it ?

Heh I recently stepped up to a Studio cat and pulled the trigger on the 27 inch Asus. Even got a really nice monitor arm so I can move it anywhere I want. Really have not found much use for the touch screen as yet. I do have the V 700 system so... WSS

I have a 23" Acer and love it. Once you select a knob or fader, as long as you don't lift your finger off the screen, you can move your finger out of the way and visually see were the fader or knob is ending up. I have it mounted like a control surface. I keep the control bar at the bottom. I have no problem controlling the transport, selecting markers etc.. I confirm that you can enter notes in the step sequencer with touch but not delete them.

I've got a dell w/ the sliding mount so it will go almost flush w/ the desk. A perfect angle. However, I'm using win7, so a lot of touch features aren't available - pinch and stuff. Instead, touch acts like a mouse and is a good alt control. And the smallish (21.5') screen sits right in front of me (where the synth used to be) so I use it more than the larger screen above. It is good for synths (esp. Alchemy's performance pad), but is mainly just an adjunct to the mouse until I get 8 on the computer. @

Hey Westside Steve! Glad to still be in touch from the VS-1880 forum days man! This is all good information and I appreciate everyone's time. I pulled the trigger on an Windows 8.1 machine for the express purpose of (ultimately) moving to a touch-screen monitor. The prices are coming down but I'm suspecting the relationship between Sonar and Windows 8.1 is still in the foreplay mode... full commitment- and marriage to come later... If I get 7 or 8 hundred I can drop without the concern of a good investment I may go for a larger touch screen. But I'll probably wait 6 months or so.

Why would you want two displays showing the same screen?? Doesn't make too much sense to me... In that video, since he has a dual screen setup, wouldn't it be better sense to use the touchscreen display as virtual keyboard synth/trigger pad/modulation and pitch bend wheels/assignable sliders/controller/etc, etc,... so that it can control the sonar application in the second display?

Jimmy, I have my touchscreen where my keyboard synth used to be, with my monitor directly above on a shelf (like the video above). The touchscreen is cloned not stretched, so it shows exactly what the monitor above shows. Otherwise, you have to make a choice about what is available on the touchscreen using the mouse to drag it. As is, a keyboard hit of D brings up the Dock which has most of my synths, etc. for touch control. As touch is currently configured in SONAR, it is an adjunct to mouse and keyboard control, not a total replacement (if you want to work fast). I know a bunch of shortcuts, I'm use to using the mouse and now I'm integrating the touch experience. Some things are just plan easier to do w/ shortcuts/keyboard since my fingers are usually already there. Play/stop via the space bar is easier than hitting the virtual buttons, single letter shortcuts, etc. etc. The mouse is more precise for certain jobs. Touch is just another tool, not the be all and end all of control. I'm sure when screens get bigger more jobs will migrate to it, but still not all jobs. @

Just pulled the trigger on X3 and am considering upgrading to Windows 8.1 for touch control. Now that this post has had some time to age, do you guys have any additional thoughts? I'm wondering whether the extra control and workflow enhancements are worth spending $400-$500 for a touchscreen monitor and Windows 8.1.
Sorry for resurrecting this thread; I figured it would be preferable to starting a duplicate!
Thanks everybody. :]

This wont help but I purposely bought a new computer at the beginning of the year with Windows 8.1 BECAUSE I eventually wanted to move to a touch-screen monitor. I haven't yet. But, like you, I'm very interested in folks who ARE using them. I'm also hoping the next release of Sonar will include some deep advancements in this technology.
