Anyone using a Presonus 22VSL
I've been struggling all day with X2 trying to get it to use 24 bit. I uninstalled/reinstalled the software on the disc and the beta version from the website. Presonus support told me there is no bit rate selection in the software (but there is for sample rate). Also in existing 24/44.1 projects, Sonar X2 is showing 16/48 (in the transport area)...if I close the project and select 44.1 in the 22vsl software and then open the project back up, X2 does switch the 22vsl back to 48K but the bit rate in audio prefs shows a greyed out 24 bit or greyed out 32 bit (under different scenarios after install/reinstalls) but it records 16 bit when hooking up a mic and later analyzing the raw file. I tried wdm and got horrific noise at even 512 and 1024 so that won't work at all. If you're using this thing and can successfully get X2 to record in anything other than 16 bit please let me know what you're doing....I know it has to work because Jim Rosebery suggested buying it. Thanks very much, Randy BTW, I leave early in the morning for the whole weekend and probably won't have internet access so please understand if I'm not responsive...I just really need to get this issue resolved by Monday.

The grayed out 24-bit or whatever is not where you change the record bit-depth. You go to Preferences, then File, Audio Data (I am doing this from memory so please forgive me as I am not at my own computer at the moment). It might be under Project somewhere too - someone else, please feel free to correct my old-farty brain. Anyways that is where you change the default record bit-depth for new projects. Your sample rate must match between Sonar and your interface settings. For a starting point, try 24-bit recording at 44100 sample rate, and an ASIO buffer size of 128, and see what happens. Please note that it is recommended that you cycle your interface after making the settings changes. This can be unplugged or powered off/on, either way is fine. Sorry for any mistakes in the precise location of that, but it is there somewhere near there. Bob Bone

Firstly you may be as old as I am (60) but judging by all the posts I've read by you ...your brain ain't near as farty as mine...anyway, you have at least partially resolved my issue ...BTW in my own defense I have to say I have had to make changes at file/audio data/file bit depths before but after almost all installations I was able to make the changes at audio/driver settings/driver bit depth. Anyway, after your suggestion I am indeed showing the correct settings in the transport areas but at audio/driver settings/driver bit depth I'm showing a greyed out 32 bit...doesn't that seem strange? Thanks very much Bob, Randy

The greyed out 32 bit in that area is 100 percent normal. This is not where you adjust and change that setting. There is one for playback and one for recording. Cj

Yup - I wish they would just mark that grayed out one or remove it or something. It confuses just about everybody. Glad you have partial resolution. Can you please elaborate on what else is still unresolved? Bob Bone

Make sure that Windows isnt using your cars for windows sound as this will limit you to 16 bit no matter how you try to change it in sonar

Can you please elaborate on what else is still unresolved? I don't like to be the knucklehead but the answer to CJ's statement... The greyed out 32 bit in that area is 100 percent normal. I mean I guess everything has indeed been resolved but I wonder why this would show 32 bit. I also wonder why I didn't go to the right path in the first place after doing so many installations but that may be the farty part I was talking about earlier. Make sure that Windows isnt using your cars for windows sound ..... That's another thing I forgot to do! Thanks very much guys, I can enjoy my trip with no concerns now. Your farty brain friend, Randy

but I wonder why this would show 32 bit. g_randybrown, because that is what it's suppose to do. It shows up because that's what your in. Its normal operation. There is nothing wrong with it being grayed out.. Your like asking why the track meters move when the track is playing. It moves because that is what its suppose to do. There are 2 different places for Bit Depth: One is for Playback and one is for Recording. Cj
