Anyone using a RME Fireface 800 (or any other) *and* an external digital console ?
I am just trying out a RME Fireface 800 this week-end, and think about purchasing it. However - and I assume this is my lack of experience - I need to understand a little more how I must use the unit when using its analog inputs for recording and getting playback simultaneously.
Here is (was) my setup:
- Frontier Design Dakota (replaced by the RME Fireface 800 eventually)
- ADAT (lightpipe) connection to Yamaha 02R digital mixer : I use to go only from this mixer's inputs when recording.
- SONAR 8.5 and X1
- Quad Core PC - Windows 7 64bit
NOW TRYING THIS:
Now, I disconnected lightpipes from Dakota and connected all 4 to RME Fireface 800
Connected 02R mixer SPDIF output to REM SPDIF input
Latest (december 2010) drivers for Fireface
I encoutrered no problem playing back projects, recording via ADAT, recording mixdown via SPDIF. Bottom line : can do everything I was doing with an internal card.
Only ''problem'' is when I record via one of the RME unit analog inputs - it *does* record, except I cannot have simulataneous monitoring of what I'm recording... Again, please understand from where I stand: 10 years only via an external mixer... which I intend to keep with the RME unit. SO:
How can I get monitoring of what I am recording ? Would I need to use an analog-out of the unit and send it to an ''analog-in'' of the Console ??? Then if I wish to playback through ADAT just change my output in SONAR from RME analog to an ADAT channel after recording is done ? (I need to ensure I won't end-up recording any playback in loop at any time....)
Thanks :-)
