Anyone using touch yet?

I just ordered a new machine from ADK and I plan on installing W8 and getting a touch screen (probably a Planar Helium, as shown in the CW videos on X2a's touch features).

Just wondering if anyone else has gone this route yet and what the experience has been like.

Thanks in advance.

I purchased the 23" Acer with 10 point touch for $500.
It's not perfect, but definitely worth it IMO.

The more i use it the better the experience gets. Sometimes I'll hit the mute button when I'm going for the solo button. Last night I  unknowingly turned down the gain on a piano midi track trying to scroll with touch in Console View. It took me a while to figure out why the notes I played the hardest were only ones sounding.

It would be nice if Cakewalk published a list of what works with touch.

I am enjoying using touch. I have no regrets.

I asked the same question a few days ago.  Seems like it's new technology- for Windows anyway- and the monitors are a bit cost-prohibitive.  I suspect that will change once the demand ramps up.  I'm certainly interested as I've been using a mouse with Cakewalk since 1990!

I think its a little early still. But I am very glad Treefight is getting one. Treefight can report on his adventure with touch and X2. I look forward to any and all reports. Treefight I am hoping it all goes well for you and that your reports are positive.

I know that it's all subjective. I've read several comments on how expensive it is. To me,$500 for a second monitor that also does way more than any surface controller can do is really not that expensive.
I think I paid over $200 for my non-touch 23" Acer a few tears ago and maybe $250 for my Axiom 49 keyboard that all I could control are transport functions and 8 faders at a time.Trying to figure out which fader is assigned to which track
The touch screen absolutely blows them away. Not to mention the ease of use for non-Sonar apps on your PC.

I got Win8 on my Vista machine after I read all these things about how bad the UI was. Based on those previews, I never thought of putting Win8 on my music computer. But after having it on my home PC for little over a month, what can I say? I am really liking it and will buy the upgrade for my music pc before the price of Win8 goes up. To install at a later date of course!

Thanks John.  Here is my initial report, as promised:

First, let me say that I'm using a W8 laptop (ADK desktop hasn't arrived yet) and the Planar 27 Helium shown in the CW vids.

Overall, after a brief time getting used to the touch screen and realizing what works, what doesn't work, and what sort of works, it is a LOT of fun and somewhat addictive.  Also, switching between the mouse and keyboard and the touchscreen is not as much of a pain as I expected.

Now, the good and the not-so-good, with the disclaimer that I'm still getting used to the touch controls:

As might be expected, there is a bit of a learning curve in knowing how to toggle or otherwise use the touchscreen controls.  Specifically, knowing where to touch.  That may sound odd, but personally I feel like I have to aim a bit high for the appropriate control.  It may be the angle of the monitor.

The console view controls are very good.  The now time is flawless.  The MSR buttons are nearly flawless, as are the PC controls.  Transport controls are iffy for me.  Play and stop work well, but, rather oddly, FF works 90% of the time, which RW barely works at all (even though the transport controls are large and should be easy to "touch").  You can group tracks and controls, at least grouping sends (haven't tried anything else yet).

The track view controls are a mixed bag for me so far.  Using multi-touch on the tracks/clips works great, as does scrolling up and down, though you have to touch the clips as opposed to the "control" section where the widgets are.  The MSR widgets in track view, on the other hand, are very iffy.  For some tracks they work all of the time, for others they don't work at all despite multiple attempts.  For those tracks, MSR will work in the inspector.  Needless to say, selecting a track to show it in the inspector before selecting MSR is not very efficient.

Scrolling up and down the PC is also very iffy.  It only works for me about 25% of the time.  I'm not sure if I'm touching in the wrong place.  I believe its the "handle" on the left side of the module, but then it's all to easy to move a module instead of scrolling the entire PC. I haven't found a method that works better than 25% of the time.

Plugins:  I find the touch controls for plugins VERY helpful.  Double touching a plugin opens it up.  The controls for the plugins I've tried so far (limited on my laptop, but include those from Waves, IK Multimedia, and Native Instruments) have worked flawlessly, which makes for a very nice control surface without messing with ACT, Automap, etc., which, for me, is a big deal.  Browsing presets depends on the specific plugin.  For example, in Amplitube 3 it is nearly impossible because the browser menus and submenus are so small.  On the other hand, Guitar Rig 5, which its large font plugin browser, is very easy to scroll and select presets.

In sum, I don't regret upgrading the W8, nor purchasing the touchscreen.  It's a lot of fun and, in many instances, improves workflow, again, at least for me.  On the other hand, there are quite a few things to be sorted out.  I'm not sure if "bugs" is necessarily the correct word, but nonetheless, I hope CW continues to improve the touchscreen capabilities.  It could be a real game-changer in the industry, IMHO.

    As always, YMMV.

    Regards,

    Chris

    Re:Anyone using touch yet? 2013/01/22 15:16:01 (permalink)
    Thanks for that report Chris-

I wanted one of those Planars but it's just not an option where I live so I got a "Viewsonic TD2220" It is 22.5-23 inch and only two simultaneoius touch points. But....I'm very impressed by the monitor itself.

I've got it beneath my 24inch main monitor which I now have raised on a plinth/platform. The stand, which is removable, works perfectly to lay the monitor on a 30 degree angle when the monitor is upside down (just use flipped landscape mode)- it's a very elegant solution.  Geez, I don't know how to post photos so this is going to get ridiculous fast- I think I better leave off with the monitor placement description :)

I'm not that impressed with alot of the DAW touch features but maybe that is because I only got it yesterday. But like Chris says- it works really well with plugins- although to be honest I still prefer mouse and shift key at this stage. I wish there was a way to throw a plugin over to a track without sliding it the whole way- that can get a bit tiresome. Like, give the throw a bit of impetus and so you can throw it a way and then let go and it keeps going by itself for a while thru inertia and then you can "catch" it again with your finger and pull it to where it needs to go.

In conclusion: had to be there!

Thanks for sharing your experiences Chris. I'm interested in Win8 in general and touch in particular. As soon as RME update their drivers I would like to proceed in a similar way to what you did.

    Thanks again, very helpful.

yeah Chris thanks for the scoop!  Getting away from the intensive mousing has been a long time coming and I can't wait until this stuff comes of age!  I suspect it wont take long either!
