Anyone watch le Tour Saturday?

I got back from Orlando yesterday and watched the whole thing... it was like listening to Hayden or sumthin like that.

It was a grand spectacle to be savored and remembered.

A classic one day race from start to finish.

The best part about it was that there is no clearly dominate overall standings rider this year... so for the first time in years the head to head racing went all the way to the finish line of the stage that may end up being the called toughest stage of the tour.

anyways....

best,
mike

I used to ride when I was young but, now, today's stage is the kind I prefer to participate in.

This particluar stage had back to back climbs... and each descent was on a very narrow rural road with rough pavement and few safety rails.

The race ended on a climb as well. Anyone could have cracked at any moment... yet the team leaders all made it to a final duel at the end.

The day prior a guy bridged a gap to the break away on the final descent, in the last few minutes to win the race.

    He was clocked at 69mph!!!

That's like... nearly impossible to do on a normal bicycle without aero fairings and such.

I paid NBC sports $30 bucks to see the complete stages with full replays all month... for me it was a great deal.

It's streaming video I get on via my DSL internet.

I think they have some good free short packages as well.

Believe me, if you're watching any TV at all you're paying for it.  When 1/3 of the time you're subjected to commercial after commercial, yes, you are definitely paying for it!

That is exactly why I do not have Cable, Satelite, nor even an Antenna.

I happily pay for Netflix, my DSL line, and now for just this month... the commercial free NBC Sports web streaming package.

Its like having a DVR of the whole race.

I've really enjoyed both this tour and the business model of me paying specifically for what I actually want to see.

    anyways,

    best,
    mike

I am losing track of which stage I am watching because I watch a day or two behind. The mountain stage I believe you refer to was great. I have a tough time watching these guys. Going downhill on winding mountain roads at 40-60 mph. Insane.

    Broken pencils are pointless.

I'm missing it more than seeing it :-(  but finally got to go back and see this car accident

(I'm not promoting CSMonitor, I just couldn't find a version on YouTube that wasn't blocked due to copyright concerns)

I was very impressed in another article about the accident that the team decided not to pursue legal action after representatives of the television company came to the team's hotel to apologize for the accident.  Now THAT's what I call being a good sport!

I still haven't figured out what the driver was thinking.  He just swerved right into them!

Kudos to both riders for getting patched up and finishing the ride (one later went to the hospital to get over 30 stiches - he's the one barrel-rolling into a barbed-wire fence).  Also kudos to the race organizers who awarded both the "Aggressive Rider of the Day" (symbolized by a red number to have on your bike during the next stage).  Never before had the award been given to two riders.

I think the tree sticking out funny on the side of the road jumped out at him from his peripheral vision.  I didn't know that other stuff, but those are the sorts of things that make the Tour so great.

I always think it's funny when the announcers are talking away about a guy that's framed in the camera when he suddenly stops, whips out his you-know-what and proceeds to take a "natural break" for all the world to see.  The announcers are such nice, proper Brits that they are obviously embarrassed but usually come up with something witty to say while they hope the French producer controlling the feed will notice quickly and jump to another shot!  LOL!

Bob Roll tells a funny story about taking a more severe natural break... he thought he had found some *preva see* but in fact ran behind a shrub and right into the view of a young family having a roadside picnic before performing the full squat.

    Ah the spectacle....
