Anyone with Tascam 16x08 using WDM successfully?

I have 1.04 installed, the latest driver at time of writing.

Tascam claim to have fixed issues with the Chrome internet browser, which I hoped implies Windows Driver Mode/Kernel Streaming, but when I use WDM/KS I just get noise. I can see the noise already on the VU meter when I arm a track.
I tried from Sonar 8 all the way up to SPlat Lexington (all 64-bit). Same thing throughout.

MME also does not work cleanly, yet it DOES work fine in Audacity (soundwise).

Anyone having success with any other driver modes apart from ASIO?

My older US-1641 and the US-1800 work together at the same time over WDM. I'd like to add this newer brother for live band recording (Irish folk - many musicians).

Keeping an eye on this thread, I'll have one of these in a few days time. I'll share my thoughts when I get a chance to test it.

The problem is Sonar, not the Tascam US-16x08 drivers.

I have spent the the evening tracking this down.

I tried the 16x08 with Reaper 5.11 with ASIO and WDM.
Both modes work in Reaper.

I then installed ASIO4All (ASIO4All just wraps the WDM
drivers) and Sonar worked! I could record with the 16x08.

Just to make sure ASIO4All really WAS taking the WDM drivers, I
then also connected my Tascam US-1641 and my US-1800.
All three interfaces were visible in ASIO4All and subsequently also
visible in Sonar.

I then did tests and apart from poor latency and a slight
out-of-sync between the 3 interfaces (easily fixable in post), I can
record from all 3 interfaces at the same time.
Standard ASIO does not allow multiple interfaces, WDM does.
So ASIO4All really is taking the WDM drivers.

Next I uninstalled ASIO4All, hooked Sonar directly via WDM/KS - and again
I get that constant white noise when I arm a track.

In conclusion, there is something new in the 16x08 drivers that
Sonar is getting wrong.

By contrast, Reaper and ASIO4All do it right.

Edit: I will repost this in the Problems forum.

I've not tried WDM with my 16x08.  I did have problems with another piece of software and the dev did something to make the software work better with "Int24 LSB" interfaces.  Whatever he did completely solved the problem.

Armed with that info, maybe there are some of the WDM parms that can be tweaked to make it work better.

If I get enough time to try and reboot a few times, I'll let you know.  I'm on around the clock downloads for the next day or two though.

It's interesting that MME doesn't work cleanly either - that's like the dumb safe model that should pretty much work with everything.

Considering TASCAM is a Gibson brand like Cakewalk is now, I'd expect this to be resolved pretty quickly after the root issue is determined.

Have you tried things like changing buffer sizes and that kind of stuff?

I'm glad you are aware of the offset issue you get with WDM mode. I did some loopback tests a while ago and with my us1641 Sonar's offset was calculating wrong. In ASIO it was perfectly in sync.
But if your only using that mode to record multi track than it's not an issue as long as you're aware of it's presence.

As long as you swicth back to the ASIO drivers for overdubbing.
Live recordings often need a little push and shove anyways to correct phase issues etc.
Record a strong transient that bleads into a channel of each interface if possible.
Split a drum part to each interface or just a room mike.

I'm using my Tascam to record every show we play. I also use the USB output of our Yamaha mixer for the board mix. It works great in WDM mode with only a 50 ms offset issue between the Tascam and the Stienberg ( Yamaha uses Stienberg drivers)
Because the drums are in both mixes it's easy to zoom in and nudge.
I originally flipped the Phase which actually worked, untill I noticed the offset.

Yes, I did the usual buffer size thing.
I have posted a bug report.

I just gave it a go with WDM/KS in X3e.  What a gawd-awful buncha noise!  Back to ASIO and it was joy again.

Then tried it with Reaper even though WDM is show with "(Win Xp)".  Worked fine.

What was the report number?  Please edit the subject to show the number so we can follow.  I can help doing tests along the way.

OK, doing some testing now.

Yep, I see what you guys mean - WDM is pretty awful and no amount of changing of settings will get rid of the issue.

WASAPI works... just. It looks like right-justified data is what it likes or it sounds like it's running through a ring modulator. I could get it to work but it was noisy.

MME worked fine with a high latency, as is expected.

ASIO is the only mode that it'll work well in, as you guys mentioned. In fact, reading the manual just then, it even suggests that the only mode to use in SONAR is ASIO, so I'm guessing this is a known issue.

So, not a solution but at least you can't put it down to a weird installation or dodgy hardware at least.

It's probably worth opening a ticket to mention it, but since it was stated in the manual to use ASIO mode, it wouldn't be a big surprise if you got a "known issue, here's the workaround" reply on that, but it couldn't hurt. Perhaps contacting TASCAM about the driver?
