Anything besides input echo?

Newbie Basic Question:  Sonar X1 Essential
Windows 7, USB Blue Snowball Mic and USB Headphones

When recording a new track while an instrucmental is playing, how does someone hear themselves
as they record?  The input echo button would be great if it didn't have the delay!

Embarassed to ask, but I've got to start.

Thanks.

    I was gonna say:

Split your signal before the daw and monitor that, but it's @#$%^ USB.

So no aside from reducing the latency on your sound card that may not be possible without ASIO4ALL.

Don't be embarassed - we've all had to be new at this once!
You will have a problem getting rid of that delay if you are just using USB Ins (microphone) and outs (headphones.)  Does your computer have any kind of audio device like a soundblaster or something?

Hi Brian, I've got a Realtek Audio Card.  I'm not sure if I can configure it differently.

Hmmm . . . .  you're probably going to have to put a little more $$$ into your hardware if you are going to get useful results. The problem is that you don't have a device that is capable of making the analog to digital conversion quickly enough to make it useful for real time monitoring. (Although someone will chime in and say what great results he's getting from his Realtek!)
Especially if you are using audio loops, soft synths and'or effects, you will need something with a bit more Ooomph!

if you dont have the money look into asio4all...worked for me till i got a soundcard.
takes a few to learn how to set it up(but easy)..it'll get you by till you can afford even a cheap soundcard...ps..i had a realtek on my wifes...worked great with asio4all (plus its a free download)

    Hi Charlie,

I downloaded Asio4All.  Since I have Windows 7, I couldn't find any mention about installing it with the instructions that came with it....they seem to be for XP or older.

Can you point me in the right direction to configure Asio4All?

    Thank you!!

open the file and run it..i used it 4 win.7 too.it will be in your download files probably..thats no problem..go to preference menu.under the drivers tab the wave profiler probably has you using mme..change it to asio4all..the profiler may do some tests..and you should be ready to use it..you may first have to click on the asio panel in the same menu in preferences..open that panel..click on the thing that looks like a wrench(its tools)disable your reeltek card from in there.enable asio4 all on inputs and outputs.do not use ms synth wave..un click it if you see it.close it and have fun.i strongly suggest you read the user manual that comes with asio4all to better understand whats going on.any problems and i will check back to see how your doing..this will help alot.trust me.
