Apogee Rosetta 200 interface to pc - toslink?

Ok, question for the tech/hardware gurus out there...Id like to purchase an Apogee Rosetta 200  http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/Rosetta200 for my AD/DA conversion.  However, I don't really want to purchase the symphony expansion cards for it as well...so what I'd like to do is just get a  basic sound card  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16829102017 that supports TOSLINK and use that to transfer my data in and out of my PC.  Or do I need to go a little fancier and get something like this?  http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/Audiophile192.html Am I on the right track with this, or am I crazy?  Ive also read some good things about the Lynx lineup...

 Any help appreciated.  Thanks!
-Chris

    potatohead,

you are on the right track.  The Rosetta does the conversion - you just need to pipe it into your computer.  The m-audio should be the better choice - I'd be leery of trusting a consumer card to sync to.

The lynx stuff is superb, too.  They have their pci card stuff.  They also have a new mastering unit, 2x2 over USB w/ extra digital i/o.   Their USB stuff works, as opposed to their firewire which had more problems.  If you are going to sling around that much for the Rosetta + extras, that might make sense.  Your options to expand beyond stereo in and out via ADAT is built in.

AT has given you good advice. If you're investing in this level of converter, a better interface is the way to go. You need to take into consideration that Lynx, RME, Apogee, SSL, etc. are in the business of creating AD/DA and interfaces for recording. Thus they provide excellent drivers that will work with Sonar or whatever DAW you use. I personally use dedicated converters as well, and the RME RayDAT PCIe card has been great. The drivers and extras are great too.

Thanks guys, that helps alot!  One more question...looking at the M-audio card, I would be using SPDIF then to transfer the data...is that good enough you think for my home studio purposes, or do I need to spend a much bigger chunk of change to get something that can do aes/ebu?

    Thanks!
