Apple Mac

I've recently converted over to apple, but I don't want I lose sonar. Is there a way to keep sonar platinum on my IMac?

I am not an Apple user (or fan) but if you search this forum you will find many Apple users utilize Bootcamp to boot into Windows on their MACs. Some even say the MAC runs Sonar better than a Windows PC.You will have to get hold of a legal copy of Windows.
With google search for the following...

Sonar Platinum, Cubase Pro 8.5, Reaper 5, Studio One 2

I ran Sonar on a bootcamped Mac for a few years - works fine. I wouldn't go so far as to say it ran better, but it did run just as well:)

Avoid windows emulators like 'Parallels' that run a virtual machine inside OSX though. All resources are shared and the driver layering is a bit of a nightmare. Bootcamp works well because your Mac essentially boots up as a native windows machine and has full use of all resources.

Though you shouldn't have any issues, running Sonar via Bootcamp is not technically supported.

I dunno, to me wanting to run SONAR on an Apple computer is mind boggling. Presumably one goes to a Apple/Mac for the software that is available/written for it.

Since bootcamp, as I understand it, is essentially just Apple supplied Windows drivers for their hardware, a dual-boot manager and an installation system that allows repartitioning without deleting the existing drive contents I can't see what there is not to support any more than two dual-boot Windows installations on the same hardware.

I'm pretty much PC-less at the moment, as the sig PC has become very unreliable, which means I've mostly been using Logic recently. I've been giving a lot of thought to dual booting the Macbook using bootcamp - Logic's OK, but Sonar has an edge in many ways and I'm far more used to how Sonar does things. Though I wish MS would come up with something that works as well as Apple's core audio and core MIDI.

Sonar Platinum 64bit, Windows 8.1 Pro 64bit, I7 3770K Ivybridge, 16GB Ram, Gigabyte Z77-D3H m/board,
ATI 7750 graphics+ 1GB RAM, 2xIntel 520 series 220GB SSDs, 1 TB Samsung F3 + 1 TB WD HDDs, Seasonic fanless 460W psu, RME Fireface UFX, Focusrite Octopre.
Assorted real synths, guitars, mandolins, diatonic accordions, percussion, fx and other stuff.

Welcome to every Mac user at my work. I work for an engineering college and so most programs are Windows or Linux. There's some stuff with Mac support these days, but not a ton. What's more we have Windows and Linux support staff, and our central systems support both. So, you'd get a PC if you worked here, right?

Nah, some people have to get a Mac because, reasons. They generally have some justifications but usually what it actually comes down to is they think they are hip and cool to own and so they want one, particularly when the state is picking up the tab not them.

However reality then intrudes and they need to do things they can't on OS-X. So they get bootcamp and install Windows (for which we have a site license) so they can run their Windows software. Alternatively some of them get a Windows system and RDP in to it.

I cannot understand why, as it is extra cost and effort compared to just getting a Windows system, but as you say to each their own. It just annoys me when they then want Mac support :P

MAC and Boot Camp with Windows installed runs Well.  My Mac is a quad-core 4th-gen Haswell 3.5 GHz Intel Core i5 processor with 16GB of 1600 MHz DDR3 RAM using Boot camp, I installed Windows 8 and then upgraded to Windows 10 with Sonar X3 installed.   My son uses Logic on the OS X side but I use Sonar X3 on the Windows side when we are in the play room of the house.

I do have a separate Daw for my studio which is just a Windows 10 PC and Sonar Platinum.
Get it, you won't regret it.

All the Mac people asking why they can't access their files on the other partitions, why their AU plug-ins don't work, why is El Capitan not recognizing their interface, when will Cakewalk come out with a version for the iPad, etc. etc.

I've been running Sonar on a MacBook Pro for years and it runs well. Really well. That laptop has been the most reliable piece of computer hardware I have owned. And I'm a PC user primarily and I've developed in and for "nearly" every OS and hardware combination out there.

That being said, heed the advice about installing Windows via bootcamp and run it directly (rather than through the Mac OS).

You can get fancy if you want and create a virtual machine within the Mac OS and then map that to be your bootcamp partition. That way you can access the Windows partition within the Mac OS or directly. Though make sure you always run Sonar in that "direct" mode.

I have a regular PC that I built myself as a powerhouse machine, but it's nice to have portability of a laptop. Having had the MacBook for years as that portable option I don't think I'll be in a hurry to get a regular PC laptop

Good luck!

I don't get all the magic voodoo that seems to surround Mac. They mostly use decent hardware but many people seem to think that somehow even Windows apps run better on a Mac because it's a Mac. Once you strip a Mac of OSX, it's not really a Mac anymore. It's just a PC with ok to good hardware and expensive styling. Mac doesn't really make much of their own hardware apart from the outer design. It's just an Intel CPU in there, generic RAM, 3rd party hard drives that you can buy anywhere, etc.

I think many people are comparing the performance to a ****ty specced PC. Plus, you know, cognitive dissonance dictating that after all that extra money and effort, it must be better.

FWIW, There's a huge difference between a "regular" PC laptop... and a top-tier custom laptop.
With the later, you can use a Clevo shell and run a 6700k desktop (not mobile) CPU.
Though not cheap, this is the closest you'll get to true desktop performance in a laptop.
Smokes all other laptops... including the highest-end MBP... at about the same cost as that MBP.

I have a Clevo shell of a few years old. It runs a 2760 Sandy Bridge quad core i7 and is still powerful enough to do almost anything I throw at it. I can highly recommend these if anyone wants to get a serious PC laptop. The only thing is the adapter is huge and the battery life isn't great. Probably also because it has a powerful video card in it (or it was, four years ago).

I agree...

You know where Apple is genius?
In the packaging and presentation.
It looks impressive/slick.

Been to a couple graphic design firms... where they had both Mac and PCs.
They'd rave about how awesome the Macs were compared to PCs.
They were comparing Mac Pros to generic HP PCs.
At 4-5 times the cost, the Macs were indeed superior.

You're right about Mac hardware.
I just recently upgraded a new 27" 5k iMac.
Put in a 6700k CPU, 32GB RAM, 500GB SSD
Ironically, it's faster than current generation Mac Pros (but that's another topic/thread).
The hardware inside is decent to good.  There's nothing exceptional.
Similar in principal to other "off-the-shelf" machines... but with a higher base standard.
Would I want the iMac as my main/only machine?  No...
Does it look slick with the small brushed-aluminum keyboard and mouse with touch/scroll surface?  Yes.

Yeah, the Clevo shells and PS aren't slim/svelte.
Big/Burly... built for high-performance
Battery life isn't particularly good... but I've never been in a situation where I couldn't get power.
Skylake runs a bit on the cooler side... so it works particularly well in this application.

The Mac Pro trashbox design is hilarious to me on multiple levels :)

Yeah I think what Apple did well is
1. styling
2. not trying to fight in the budget market in the way that PC manufacturers do
3. forcing people to keep upgrading and wanting the newest OS

This does end up as a better experience for those who don't like to fuss about with their PCs too much and don't mind spending extra. But buying a Mac because it should somehow run Windows better than a regular PC is pure idiocy to me.

Agreed...

Have you priced the cost of external Thunderbolt drives?  Wow!
1TB external conventional HD is $200.  Two bay TB1 enclosure (no drives included) is $300.
With the "Cylinder" Mac Pros, you've got a single internal drive.
My main DAW is loaded with SSDs (eight plus a conventional HD).
It would cost me $2-$3k to duplicate that setup via Thunderbolt.

I've been primarily a PC/Windows user at home. But in the past ten years I've witnessed more issues with similar-priced laptops -- we're talking top of line laptops from top companies in this area -- than I've ever had with my MBP. I'm not an Apple fan per se. Just telling my experiences.

In my response to the OP I gave some helpful advice. I think that's what this forum is all about :-)

In terms of cost for performance nothing beats getting a regular PC laptop. But in my experience the Mac (which I have for work not my studio) I have has simply been more reliable over the course of several years. And when I've run Windows/Sonar on my Mac it's been a good experience -- which surprised me.

But the OP says they have a Mac and it's more helpful to tell them how they can be productive with Sonar on it

Interesting.  I want to stay on Windows7 and just found out that Microsoft loaded 3GB of Windows10 onto my SDD without my consent and make it tricky to delete.  That got me considering switching to Mac (since Sonar on Linux is unlikely).  Looking at the Cakewalk site now it appears Sonar is supported on Mac now... so what's all this talk of Bootcamp?

I suspect that's just for the instruments and FX they sell that are supported on Mac. You can use CCC to manage those on a Mac. Sonar itself remains, for the moment at least, a Windows-only program.

I bought my first Mac because of Final Cut Pro... the plan was to dual boot Windows so I could run SONAR - I never got around to it then I found Logic to be surprisingly performant at low latencies, so I got lured in to the whole ecosystem 😳 I'm now seeing how iPad-based music production is starting to make great strides...wish Cakewalk was part of it.
