Applying note names or drum map in step sequencer

I am using the step sequencer 2.0 with Studio Instrument drums.  Is there a way to get the note names (drum name mapped to a note) in the step sequencer.  I did it manually for one sequence but then when I start a new sequence the drum names are not there.  Can I somehow apply a drum map to it?

Thank you

Yes, the Step Sequencer uses Drum Maps for the note names. Assign a Drum Map to the output of the MIDI track you are using. SONAR already includes a Drum Map for the SI Drums called Studio Instruments - Drums.

Click on the Output control of the MIDI track and choose New Drum Map > Studio Instruments - Drums.

Ok, I tried that but the track is not a MIDI track. It has a keyboard icon and is a soft synth track.  There is no assign a drum map option.

Click the track to make it the active track. You should now see its parameters in the Inspector. At the bottom of the Inspector, click the MIDI tab. You should now have access to the MIDI parameters of the Instrument track... including the MIDI output, which is where you would choose the Drum Map.

Is there a way to apply a drum map to a simple instrument track?  So far I can't figure it out.  I can do it with seperate MIDI/audio tracks.

Hi Ted,

Follow the steps in my previous post... that should work. The Inspector now gives you access to all the parameters of a Simple Instrument Track by clicking the MIDI and Audio tabs at the bottom of the Inspector.

It worked.  Thank you for your helpful answer.  Is there any documentation that I should have been able to find this in?

Yes - I think the instrument tracks has gained usability in X1. I might be wrong here, but I have the impression there are more parameters in reach (when using the inspector) than in the "old" 8.5. This makes the "I" button (to fold and unfold the inspector) really valuable. It is very easy now to fast tweak some settings in audio or midi in such a track.

I was using a MIDI+Audio track in "8.5", just because not all things where accessible in the simple instrument track. This is greatly bettered in X1 thanks to the MID/Audio split in the inspector, making the MDI+Audio combo only needed in special cases. I am using the Instrument track much more now...

It's probably in the SONAR help somewhere... look up Inspector and/or Simple Instrument Track.

Yes, you're absolutely right. Instrument tracks are much easier to work with now. I never used them in 8.5, but now I use them all the time because all parameters are accessible via the Inspector.
