Aquarium

Thought I would share one of my other hobbies.  This is a 125 gallon marine (salt water) aquarium with live rock.  It's alot of fun and my cat can sit and watch it for hours.  The fish move around too quick for me to get any decent pics of them, so these will have to do.

Very nice!  "A lot of fun???!"  Damn...  I had a 50 gallon tank for a while and was about to shoot myself in the head.  What a pain to keep up!  That and all of my expensive fish either hid or ate each other...  Bah.

Yeah... I am in awe of anyone who can keep a saltwater tank in any sort of reasonable condition.

While some may call it a hobby, and I'm sure it is, it is also more of a calling or passion or just plain old hard work.

I tried to do a salt water tank.......what a miserable failure....

Your tank, on the other hand looks like you know what you're doing so yeah kudos to you.

I used to know a guy who also was into salt water aquariums. This guy had taken a small room that abutted his living room and turned it into his "fish room" .  He built a sturdy bench and cut a hole  (a big hole) in the wall and had a custom built tank fitted into that hole.  He had a shark in that tank, (about 2.5' in length) as well as quite a few other species of saltwater fish.  The tank looked fantastic from the living room..... like a living picture on the wall. IIRC that tank was about 4' tall by 6' wide and he told me he spent quite a bit of time on it every week.

I don't even try to keep goldfish any more..... heck I've managed to kill 12 of them in the backyard pond this year already.

That diving helmet is really cool too!

    Man that looks great Mark.

I had fresh water tanks as a kid and for some time after I married.

In 1975 before we were married we lived in an apartment on the second floor.
We had a show tank and IIRC it was 75gals and on stand that just fit.
Everyday around 4:00 I'd lay on the couch and watch Star Trek and the fish.
I fell asleep one day and I was awaken by loud space fighting and the fish tank
rocking and enough so that water was splashing out and I couldn't get my
bearings or balance when I jumped up...there was an earth quake going on!

We've talked many times about getting a saltwater set-up...not sure why we haven't.

    That looks incredible Mark.

And like Herb, I love the diving helmet (and the 'jaws').

Thanks guys. The problem with getting into this hobby is that it cost too much for the beginner to afford a stable tank. By necessity rookies get smaller tanks, and smaller tanks are way too volatile. It is much easier to keep the chemistry stable in a larger tank. There aren't as many fluctuations in temperature and ammonia/nitrate relationships. I had 55 gallon salt water tanks for years and gave it up for a while. This time when I got back into it I went big with the 125 so it would be easier.

    they are beautiful!

I love to look at them but I have no desire to work on them every day.  way too much maintenance for me - I have other things I'd rather be doing.

Honestly Reece, the only thing I do everyday is feed the fish.  I may have to clean algae off the glass once every couple of weeks.  And I do a partial water change (20 %)  and filter clean every couple of months.  Other than that it pretty much takes care of itself.  The whole key is to get the tank to survive long enough to get extablished where the bacteria do the work.  It took about 6 months of volatility on this one before it reached a homeostasis.

We had an aquarium when I was growing up.  Ours was made out of porcelain.  I don't think anything lived in there for more than a week or two.

Thanks James.  Those magnet things don't work for me.  The tank gets serapulid worms which are kinda barnacle-like on the glass.  A special scouring pad type of cleaner works great on them.

How cool! We used to have a large one like yours but decided to downgrade when we had fewer fish. I see you have some chromis like us :)

I absolutely love Aquaria I get mesmerized and can spend hours watching without realising the amount of time passing.

I'll not keep fish though, or any other animal for that matter, until I've learned to look after myself properly.
