I have used Cakewalk products working in other studios since Pro Audio 9. I am a proud user of 8.5.3 and X1 in my own personal studio. I am 59 years old. Gee, a fossil. I have played professionally since age 17. I have been blessed to have performed and recorded with a stellar list of stars thru the years. I worked in Canada in the studios in Halifax, Nova Scotia. I have composed soundtracks for documentarys and commercials. You name it I have done it. From the ride to the gig on top of the gear in the back of a Volkswagen van to Lear jets and limos. And, Yes, I have used Pro Tools, Cubase, Samplitude, and Logic. I tell you now, there is no best DAW! They all have their place and they all have their glitches! But, I have always found Cakewalk products to be simple, easy on the eyes, and great sounding. You will have to pry my cold dead fingers from my DAW with Sonar on it. X1 has been a long hard road and still has a ways to go, but, I really believe that this is a big step in the right direction for the future of the DAW. Gosh, I sound like a commercial! Take it from an old workhorse in the industry playing, composing, engineering, and producing for over 40 years. Sonar is very close to the greatest DAW I have ever worked with. Peace!

Yes. I run a production dept. for 7 radio stations and SONAR has been our main software since version 1 way back 10 years ago. There are three suites all using it daily. Version X1 took a little getting used to, but my two other producing partners are really liking it, especially the smart tool functions.  Our only gripe is that corporate will not upgrade us to 64 bit Win 7. We do also use Adobe Audition, but that is more for wave editing. I would say our ratio is 90% Sonar 10% Adobe Audition.

On a side note we are also using Benstat's Sonar Helper utility as well.

Another one here. I don't run a pro studio but I am a full-time pro musician, involved in a lot of different areas including a project studio and a lot of live work and X1 is my central DAW. I'm using it in both capacities pretty intensively at the moment and it's performing well for the way I use it. Clearly there are others around who are less thrilled with it, but since you asked, here's a vote for yes. It may not be perfect or everyone's cup of tea, but it's most assuredly a professional tool.

Hmm. I do three things for a living, which are design consultancy, journalism, and audio production. So I don't know whether that disqualifies me from your "No part time" caveat. It's certainly not the case where one of those tings pays for the other two as hobbies; they're all roughly equivalent chunks of my income.

In any case, yes, am doing lots of professional audio work in X1 and finding it generally excellent.

Yes,  full-time music composer for 17 years.  Before that I was a audio engineer/mixer and a composer so that would be 25 years.  I started using Cakewalk 3.0..I think it was 1993.

I havent had a real gig in years.. did alot of demo work when i lived in L.A. I still play and do stuff for people all the time. but its never Sonar. Its mostly PT, Logic, even FL and Reason.. it doesnt mean anything, you stick with the DAW you know best..and i have encountered the same issues in them all.. but .. all my musician friends say Sonar is a mutha..personally my studio is set up strictly for writing and arranging..my wife doesnt allow (beats) in the house. you have to be an actual musician to get in here..she would throw Clive Davis out in a heartbeat.. Yes, we digitize audio tapes, vinyl, etc. for industry and private customers. We are restoring audiotracks for film and radio production. Mastering music for bands. Sonar is not only for musicians. I think sonar is also the best and fastest audioeditor.

I am 59 years old. Gee, a fossil.

Us fossils be good folk! I'll be 60 in January... are you from Macon or do you just live there. My dad grew up in Macon near the mounds, they used to play on them. They had a cable that they tied to a tree on top of one and to one at the bottom. They would use a pulley from a well with a piece of rope tied to it to ride the cable dow to the bottomhe will be 94 in August and was raised by his mon and his great grandpa, Grandpa Chapman, a Confederate veteran. My dad's dad was killed working n the RR when my dad was a baby and both his grand dads were also already dead... it is funny being that close to the past.. to my dad the Republican party is the party of Lincoln and he has no use for them still... probably because of the influence of Grandpa Chapman.) Well, us fossils can ramble on and get off topic in a hurry.

I grew up in Moultrie and now live in NW GA. There are some good folk in Macon, I reckon you are one of them.

Users are reporting on these forums that Sonar X1 Pro Channel randomly shuts itself off from time to time, or will not activate - causing them to recreate busses as a work around.

You pros who use it all day, every day....is this happening to you?

I'm sure there's plenty of pros using X1. But people asking the question usually disregard the answers, because what they want is name-dropping...

So here it is: No, Bob Rock doesn't use X1. Neither does Mutt Lange. Nor does Charles Dye.

Funny because I was recently discussing with a "pro" and we started talking software and realized that we both started w/ Cakewalk. Common/main reason for switching apps: just to simplify exchanging projects with peers. Not because Sonar isn't good enough.

Hi,Jbow. Yes, I was born and raised here. Although, I did work for Capricorn for atime, when the music bus fell off here I hit the road and never looked back. Macon has not changed much as far as music. Everyone wants to be an Allman Brothers, Wet Willie, Marshall Tucker band redux. I was not too big of a fan the first time around so hearing all these imitations can be tedious. I was always into Cream, Hendrix, Zep, etc. So I was kind of an outcast. LOL! My grandad worked for the Southern Railroad. Maybe he could have known a Chapman. Anyway, nice to touch base with you. Rock On!

I'm a pro and I've used Cakewalk products since Pro Audio 8! Use Live as well, but Sonar is my main beast and X1 is now the chosen one, although I don't use the Pro Channel for a couple of reasons. Even did some bass for a Grammy nominated album in 2008 on Sonar!

    Re:Are there any professional (full-time musician/no part-time day gig) users using X1? 2011/07/03 20:35:51 (permalink)
Full time composer working in the gaming industry.
Sonar XI is being used some of the time.
Sonar 8 is being used some of the time.
We use other audio apps from other companies as well as proprietry apps (game engine specific)

I come to these forums to see if Sonar XI is finally out of Beta... I have it open at present on an audio only piece and have had no issues. Envelopes are trickier than I'd like but that's not a deal breaker.
Feels like they are slowly fixing it :)
I tend to get annoyed with XI when deep MIDI editing is involved and revert to Sonar 8 to "git'r done" swiftly with a toolset that has served me well for many years.....Hmmm; Maybe a legacy interface option would be useful for the folks who appreciate such things?

Many companies eventually have a "Vista" moment. This is Cakewalks IMO.
Most corporations tend to employ feral types to work in marketing, this is why so much product hits the marketplace prematurely... our company has to occasionally whip the buggers back into the cages as well...(we have had to isolate their department to stop them eating their children.)
This is a contributing factor to why we have so many buggy apps... every time I hit a forum and see "when?" or "Are we there yet?" posts, I shudder knowing that somewhere a marketing bod is salivating and rattling the cage ominously :)

Don't use the bundled apps at all in any daw so can't comment on pro channel.

BTW, what, exactly, is the point of this thread?

every 6 months or so someone starts a thread that asks this question...

so it's like contractual obligation? Who'll step up next time?
