Are there any songs that immediately take you back...
... to a moment in time, or maybe to a memorable part of your life? This is one of mine, it just gets me every time I hear it: The Lotus Eaters - The First Picture Of You I can even smell the sea air at Criccieth, and hear the waves lapping on the beach. Life was about as good as it ever gets. Sadly, I don't even have the 'picture' any more.

Well there was this one time when we were teenagers and we had eaten these strange mushrooms and listened to that most famous YES album as we drove to a place called Pine Creek in Red Rock National Park. Now whenever I hear that album... I get a flashback.

Yeah. Oh,,, you want details....? Low spark of high heeled boys..... playing on the PA when I walked into the first concert I attended... Black Sabbath in the Spectrum in Philly..... in 72 I wanna hold your hand.... my house in NJ when my brother and I made guitars out of cardboard and a fence slat with kite string.... (air guitar with a prop) Michelle by the Beatles...... Michelle in school 71-72 Smoke on the water... my first battle of the bands..... disaster of a night, but fun none the less. Anything by Al Green.... my time in the marine corps especially in Puerto Rico..... several of the guys in the barricks played Al's stuff ALL THE TIME. Steppenwolf's "Monster"...the turmoil of the late 60's..... listen to that song now and it is still pertinent. Swinging..... John Anderson (country) the house gig I played in the 80's.... it was on the jukebox and on our play list. So many more tunes and each one has a memory and a place or person attached. Some elicit memories of smells, tastes, pictures in my mind.....each one unique. Ain't it funny how a simple song can do all that?

Roadhouse Blues--(thanks for the reminder, Herb) friends of mine had a garage band just after high school. I did sound/lights/roadie stuff. We entered a battle of the bands contest. I think we were doing pretty well. We were half-way through a Status Quo-influenced version of Roadhouse Blues when someone cut the power! The drummer was loving it because he got an instant solo. They found the mains and turned the power back on and we finished the song and the set. We thought we did better than the other bands, but one band brought all of their friends, so they won the popularity contest. Oh, well. They were great at playing but not so good at marketing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5nGffFJHM3g Maputo--David Sanborn & Bob James. In the late '80s-early '90s, some friends had a terrific jazz band that played Sunday afternoons at the Long Beach Rusty Pelican. Good friends. Good music. Good food. Good scenery--the restaurant was right on the marina. It was a great, relaxing way to finish off a weekend. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pzA58UwK0V0

While there are many songs that I have a nostalgic fondness for two come readily to mind. The first because it has an interesting twist to its story and the latter because of the particular things it reminds me of. When I was a teen there was an all night (midnite till 6am) radio show that originated here in our fair capital that was quite literally broadcast and "skipped" over much of the country...even into Canada that was called (for most of its run) either simply "Beeker Street" or "Beeker Street Theatre". The DJ was a fellow who called himself Clyde Clifford (his real name was Dale Sidenshwartz)...who still lives here BTW...and he played essentially the same set list every single night for years and years as I grew up. In between songs he played a melange of eerie, etherial sounds...the show, the sound and, most important, the songs were immediately identifiable to the listening public and even though the set list NEVER EVER really changed from night to night it was immensly popular everywhere it aired or could be picked up via "skip". There were a handful of songs that became the "anchors" of the show but one in particular was "Cindy's Cryin" by a group calling itself Deep Water Reunion from up Minnesota way. There was just something about the female lead vocalist's treatment that was both haunting and engaging. And, if I'm not mistaken, it was the most requested song on the show. It still brings back memories of staying up all night to listen to Beeker Street...especially on weekends....everytime I still (on rare occasions) hear it. And now the twist. Turns out the lead singers parents lived right here and when she got tired of being on the road she moved back here and settled down to raise a family. She came to work for us over twenty years ago and is now a minority partner and our "office manager". She also is still a killer singer. Small world. The second is the song "Keep on Chooglin" by Creedence. We played the album that contained that song in our drummer's parent's Buick Electra's 8track player till we wore both it and the player out on hot summer nights at the river while we chugged beer that some "older boy" had bought for us earlier that night at the liquor store just across the county line. Good times.

space_cowboy DOA by Bloodrock That one takes me back, too. The very first concert I ever went to was at the Filmore East in '73, I think. Alice Cooper was the headliner. Glass Harp opened and Bloodrock was the second act.

The world changed for me the first time I heard White Riot on the John Peel Show one night What I loved most about John Peel, and some of you old buggers will attest to this, is that he used to deliberately play all the songs in their entirety. No annoying 'DJ speak' over the intro, and he'd let 'em play right until the very end. He just knew that we were all out there with fingers poised on the record button of our radio-cassette players

I'm a fan of many genres except Country (which can still have it's moments) and cRap (which isn't music IMO and is only suitable for those with plant-life IQ's who are either in jail or should be).
