you're not likely to catch a virus as long as you're not running executable code and even then, if you download the executable ones from trusted sites that shouldn't be aproblem either.

you're more likely to have problems with free VST's crashing sonar than to get a virus from them.

unfortunately I don't know anything about the GTG DPC 3.  maybe someone else can help with that.

Well the best thing to do is for you J to DL it and let us know if it gives you any trouble.

But Beagle is right on. Also if you are running Vista or Win 7 you should also have Security Essentials from MS. It works great and is free.

Thanks for the lead on that free drum VST, J. Garcia.  I've downloaded it and tried it out in Sonar.  Pretty good samples come with it and you can load any other .wav files you want.  There are limitations, like in the number of pads, 8 - I think you'd probably be just as well off using Sonar's Session Drummer. - Here's one kind of quirky thing - Drum synths are programmed so that the closed hats cut off the open hats.  With this one, if you're still holding down Bb, the open hat, it stays open when you play either Ab or Gb.  The trick (as explained by the makers) is that you have to release Bb first - then it does what it should, cutting off the open hat sound.

But it's safe.  And I've had great success with a lot of free plug-ins.  They can be really fun to try out, and there are some real gems available.

AFAIK, there has never been a report of a VST being used as a virus delivery medium. Which is not to say it's impossible, in fact it could be quite effective as a malware container.  It's just that no one has made a utility for the script kiddies yet, and anyway malware-makers prefer to target file types with a broader install base.

The most likely problem you'll run into is the freebies just don't work, don't work well, are not CPU-efficient or even crash your DAW. If you find yourself experiencing frequent crashes, suspect those freebies first. Every crash dump I've ever had pointed to a freebie plugin, so I use very few of them now.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

The biggest problem I have had from the free VST's is that they do not all run properly. So... when you install it, keep it in a unique folder, that way, you can find it easy to remove it if it causes problems.

Always do a system set point before you install anything, run a virus scan on the file before the install, and if you have problems, remove it and if necessary, return the system to before the install.
