Are you kidding me???
On four different days over the past two weeks there has been this drilling-type noise coming from above my bedroom where the upstairs furnace is located. It only happens sporadically and, usually, in the mornings but not enough to really figure out what was going on. After having some conversations with the heating & cooling people who put the thing in originally, we were down to either a vibration with one of the pipes or an issue with the furnace (they were tentatively scheduled to come out this Friday to check things out). Well, this evening I heard the racket again and decided to go out into the backyard on a hunch. There, on top of the highest roof vent cap that goes directly down to where the furnace is (and my bedroom) was the answer. Here's an example of the problem except that the acoustics with my roof vent and pipe are FAR better than a street light! Now, I'm a nature lover but, if this keeps up, there may be one less bird around the neighborhood!

Oh I've got a yard full of the neighbor's kitties, but I like MOST of my birds (usually the little ones) so they know to stay where the rodents are and leave my friends alone. But I'll definitely consider throwing a cat up on the roof if that woodpecker keeps drilling the vent!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZCOG5RnpzUo We have this one kind of bird around here - they have such an incredible "vocabulary", they make the craziest sounds. Sometimes you'd think they're impersonating R2-D2, other times you really get the impression that they're laughing their bird's arse off. They seem to like the huge pine trees - of which we don't have any but almost all our neighbours seem to have one. They can really ruin a quiet moment - and since I like to read outside in the backyard, they do annoy the heck out of me. I never really liked birds, and my aversion only got worst after I met Joe Crapper in NY.

Actually the northern flicker sounds like a small jackhammer, not a drill per se.

You are correct. I meant to say jackhammer actually. @Rain - I like birds, but I consider pigeons as dirty rats with wings (actually, that's too demeaning to rats).

We've got several of them in the neighborhood and they love our metal chimney. Freaks the dog out too. They ignore me when I wave my arms and yell at them, so I use a slingshot and nonlethal plastic golf balls to discourage them. I'm reconsidering the nonlethal part. . . .

Now... this works on so many levels. Yes, and for once, I completely agree with me. There's an obvious reference to the thread title, a kitten, a bird, and the crowning glory - the Family Guy clip even includes the word "snarky". This could well be the most perfect CH post...................ever!! At least worthy of 'Best Answer' I would think.

At least you don't have a raven's nest right above your bedroom window. I had one 2 years ago. Started in February and went till the middle of Summer. They squawk and holler as loud and obnoxiously as they can from wee morn till midnight, especially at feeding time. Tho it was fun to see the young birds grow up and learn to fly, I got absolutely no sleep that spring.

There was this mocking bird outside my 2nd floor apartment in L.A. and after long night recording sessions I would come home and hear this guy yaking away at 3 A.M. I thought about trying to shoot it with my BB gun but he was perched across the street on the roof and knowing my luck, someone would see me with a rifle pointing it to the building and I would get arrested and so on. So I moved.

I lived in an apartment down in Irvine (Orange County area) that overlooked one of the pool areas. One night when it was warm, there was a night lark gleefully singing away and trying to copy one of those annoying car alarms - the one's that have several different sounds. He pretty much nailed most of them before horribly failing on the final sound. Then all you could hear were people laughing from all the surrounding apartments and it became very apparent how many of us had our windows open while being awake at 3am due to that stupid bird. You could hear comments from around the courtyard like "Anyone got a gun?" to "Will whoever has the alarm remote please use it on that damn bird???"

I'm thinking the Northern Flicker got shortchanged in the gene pool. It would appear that it's fairly common for it to peck away merrily on metal pipes. Most woodpeckers peck on, um, wood.
