Arrrrgggggggggghhhhhhhhhh... Am I the only person who hates the Smart Tool?

I've tried to like it, but it just seems to slow me down so much.

I don't find it 'smart' at all, it's totally unintuitive and clunky.

And why doesn't it remember what it was set to in other views when you change between them. For example, I've just been in the PRV adding some notes to a drum track. Then I switched back to the Track View because I want to do some editing. I've split a track in a few places before suddenly realising that I'm not actually splitting at the 'whole measure' snap-to-grid value I have set. And all because the fecking 'unSmart' tool is still set to 'Draw' and therefore it doesn't follow the snap settings when I click in the Track Pane

Am I missing a way to set SONAR up so the Smart Tool reverts to however it was set in each view?

As always with these type of things, I used to manage absolutely fine before we had a smart tool. I'm not one of these 'power' users who uses a lot of MIDI so I might be missing something.

Maybe you need a dumb tool to use?
(Or, perhaps, you're actually using the "Smart Arse" tool by accident?)

How can the smart tool be "set" to something though? It's an all in one affair that changes according to where you're hovering the mouse, is it not? The problem you describe sounds more like an issue with global/PRV snap settings, which to be honest perplexes me sometimes.

sharke - click on the middle mouse button and a menu pops up for your smart tool for you to change between functions.

but, yes, it does adapt to where you're working and where you're holding the mouse within the parameters of the current function.

I don't think Paul or Bill "invented" the undo command. In fact they never invented anything! You can thank Tim Paterson, the man they bought (stole) dos from. Just sayin...
Actually it was the boys at Xerox PARC, you know the guys who actually invented the GUI and the mouse.

Of course, I never said MS "invented" it. They simply behaved like a (smart) tool and "included" it....

Hold on - the HUD which appears when you press the middle mouse button allows you to switch between the smart tool (the star icon on the left) and the function-specific tools (the other 5 icons). Those other icons are not the smart tool. The only way you can change the functionality of the smart tool is by hovering it over different parts of the clip or MIDI note you're working on. You cannot change the function of the smart tool from a menu. That's the whole point of the smart tool - that you can switch functions without having to select them from a menu.

Yeah sorry guys - I didn't make it very clear did I

What I was trying to get at was that if you leave cursor set to the Smart Tool, it's a bit of a pain having to double-click every time you want to insert a note in the PRV (I forgot to mention this bit completely).

Hence I change it to the 'Draw' Tool which only requires one click, and behaves much as it did in 8.5 and before.

When I change back to the Track View, the Draw Tool is still active. What I was suggesting is that the cursor function for each View is remembered.

So for example, if I set the Smart Tool in the TV and the Draw Tool in the PRV, SONAR would remember these assigned functions when I switch between the two.

Or summat like that.

You can also single click to draw notes with the smart tool if you hold down the ALT key.

Thanks sharke. The trouble is, I use MIDI so infrequently I've never really bothered to get proficient using it.

So all tips and advice are always gratefully received, and much easier (for me) than having to read the manual or watch the tutorials

I don't hate it but I switch to other tools if I'm doing specific tasks. With the ST there are too many hotspots and status changes that it does indeed turn into a weird arsed mess and makes things harder when doing repetitive stuff. For just cruising around poking at various things it's fine though... IMO anyway.
