At my wits end (Sonar X2 & Maschine [Mikro])

Thanks to twisted6s for trying to help out b4. Anyhow I've been doing mostly audio recording for the last little while and I'm now able to tackle this properly.

I have Maschine Mikro and I'm using Sonar X2.
I can play all the sounds no problem, but when I hit record on sonar, my midi will not record when i'm pounding on the maschine.
I unplugged my Impulse61 as I can record from it no problem hoping this would allow Sonar to find the Maschine some how.
That didn't work.
I even unplugged maschine from the system, restarted Sonar, and the vst (maschine) was still in the project so I started playing the keyboard on the screen getting sounds but when I hit record STILL nothing records in sonar.

I've enable midi, I have maschine mikro checked in midi devices, it is checked in midi playback and recording.
i have no idea what else is left to do.
Any suggestions greatly appreciated. /0\

Did you switch Maschine to midi mode? Maschine VST will take ownership of Maschine hardware if not, in which case you can only record within the VST.

Just a guess here, but does the Maschine VST have MIDI output enabled?

No midi mode I mean switching the controller from Maschine control to general midi mode.
You can't record linearly in Sonar (or any DAW) when the controller is acting as Maschine, because then all pads you hit and all buttons you press and knobs you twist go directly to Maschine, which has its own sequencer. That's just how Maschine works and has always worked, it has nothing to do with Sonar. If you want to play sounds from Maschine you'll have to map the group to midi notes and switch the controller to midi mode, and choose a general midi control template. Not to sound like a dick, but if none of this makes any sense, it would help to look through Maschine's manual first. It's pretty hard to do a step by step as there are many options and every situation is different.

try this..

1. ensure that you instantiate the vst with "enable midi out"
2. you do not need to be in controller mode.
3. assume you have one group, say group A as your drum kit that goes to the sampler..ie plays drums
4. link this group A using "pad group" to another group, say group B
5. group B does not play the sampler but is directed to midi out (in Maschine)
6. Notes come out of maschine as midi to be recorded in Sonar.

That's clever, I never did it that way before. Does it do that with recorded patterns or with live playing or both? Do the notes map back into Maschine to be played? Doesn't that create a loop then?

Has nothing to do with live play or patterns.. its simply linking a group that is playing internally within maschine to a different group that plays externally.. so live paly/patterns doesn't matter.

to Sonar its simply another midi track and midi source.. There is no need for the track to have an output while you are recording. Once all recorded you have a variety of options what to do.. disable the midi input to this track and enable mid output to maschine. or just transfer the data to the regular maschine midi input track.

Right, so do the recorded notes auomatically map back to Maschine properly? Or do you map the pads to notes?

What I've done so far was map pads to notes and use a stripped down version of the factory GM drums template. I created a track template in Sonar with Maschine and 8midi tracks and set them up to play the 8 groups in Maschine. It works really well now for linear recording but it took some setting up, I never even considered doing it your way.

don't wish to be captain obvious here, but they will map exactly where you put them...:) lol

if you map pads to notes on the input to maschine then it would make sense to map pads to same notes on the same channel on the midi out options.. IF you want to play back into Maschine, but you can map whatever you like wherever you like.. eg. you may want midi in on ch 1 only with pads to notes following the maschine map and out on ch 10 and remap the pads to GM std., or you may want every pad out on same note but different channel.. its all up to you..
was simply saying how you can get midi out of Maschine..what you do with it is up to you :)

I just remember having problems in the past e.g. Exporting midi loops out of Maschine wouldn't play back the correct samples back into Maschine until telling the group to map pads to notes etc.
I'll try out your way tomorrow, thanks for the idea!

Great to hear you got it working! Maschine inside a DAW frustrated the hell out of me initially.
