Audio Device For Mixing only, not recording.

Hello all,

I recently decided to stop trying to mix in the small room, and move to a bigger room. I have a 700sq ft building in the rear of my home. I turned this into my studio. I have, up to now, been setting up singers, bands in a room thats about 35x20. I have a "walk-in closet thats about 8x20. I had all of my equipment in the closet, while the performers were in the bigger room. I am still going to "track" in the closet, but I turned 1 of the corners of the big room into my mixing area. Already had everything treated, walls and ceiling, so the sound is much better in there. No more problems with standing waves. Now, I use the same pc, just move it to the other room. I have seperate speakers, video monitor, and daw in the other room. I don't want to move the MOTU 896HD everytime I go to mix something, only want to move the PC. So, heres the question. What should I get to use as the Audio Device? It only needs to be stereo, because Im only mixing, don't need any inputs. What should I get?

Thanks

I don't want to tranfer files, plus this one has xp64bit, core 2 duo, and 6gigs of ram. Dont want to shell out the money to outfit another pc.

I use a KVM switch so I can use the same monitor, keyboard & mouse on two separate computers.

I'm sure there is a similar switch that lets you keep the same computer running, but switches between a different monitor/qwerty/mouse setup in your big room. KVM switches are not expensive, so you can use the leftover cash to buy a speaker selector switch, and good speaker cables. Best of all, it sounds like you already have the monitor, speakers, mouse, MOTU interface, keyboard, etc...

Trust me, your computer does not like to have it's components plugged and unplugged repeatedly. Computers are more robust then they used to be, sure, but what if you trip on a guitar cable while carrying your tower? Use a switch. Plus it will impress your friends - it's like a magic trick!!!

Edit - I re-read the post. I didn't do the math, so I'm not sure how long these cable runs would be. I'm sure there are limits to the KVM type switches - but I don't know what they would be.

Edit - Here's a sample link (I'm sure there are cheaper switches)...

I would go with a quality D/A converter. We use Mytek and Lucid but there's others just as good or better and if i was buying now I'd go for an Apogee MiniDac or Rosetta 200.

What about the maudio audiophile 192? Anyone using it?

Having used both the 2496 and the 192, the 192 gets my nod... it has balanced in/outs and zero-latency monitoring.

There is something to be said for jb's solution, though. Why not just go for a really good DA converter and be done with it?
