Audio Driver Bit Depth

What exactly is Audio Driver Bit Depth? I can't find it in the manual and there is nothing I could find online...

I am running 2 Motu 896HDs and have set up my Audio Options inside of Sonar to start new projects at 48 kHz and 24 bits. This seems to be working fine - my Motus both switch to 48 and the files that record are infact 48 / 24 when I look at them in a wav editor. However, when I look at the Audio Driver Bit Depth in the Audio Options dialog Sonar only allows me to select 16 bit even though I am recording 24 through the Motus. I am confused!

So what does the Audio Driver Bit Depth do exactly? Does it need to be set at 24 to record / playback 24, or is 16 OK to record 24 like I currently have set up? Is this a Sonar thing or is this something I need to contact Motu about? Anyone??

Thanks!!

    Eric:

Read the post below - it is my understanding the ADBD is how many bits the card is sending to the project - Therefore it IS possible to send 16 bits of data into a 24 bit project - However the project AND tools like sound forge will report the file is a 24 bit file but the third byte is null - ugh.... comments experts???

Well, for whatever reason it seems to be working now, lol. I must have been doing something stupid like trying to change the ADBD within a project that I had already recorded with the 16 bit depth, therefore creating a conflict and generating an error (I'm guessing). Now when switch to the 24 bit ADBD I am good to go, but I am going to run AnalogX's BitPolice on some test files to be sure. It's free at http://www.analogx.com/contents/download/audio/bpolice.htm if anyone else is concerned they are not recording at the bit depth they thought.

Thanks again everyone for all the help - the Sonar forum rocks out!!

Let me know if you get the bit police plug-in to work - all I got was plug-in improperly installed....

Reading your previous post, I realized that I had not responded to your question about BitPolice. Sorry about that. I don't know why it wouldn't install properly. One thing you might try, which worked for me on another plugin that wouldn't install, is to copy the install to your root directory, reboot into safe mode and then reinstall from there.

HowI find BitPolice to be very effective is by opening two instances of BP -- placing one before a process and one directly after -- and then comparing the two to see if truncation is taking place. (It displays 32 bits .)

    Hope this helps.
