Audio Engine Drops Out

I have Professional. I was attempting to test a new microphone but as soon as I punch record I get a message that says the audio engine had dropped out unexpectedly. When I reset it, it does it again.
How can I fix this problem

Analog mic or USB? USB mics have a built-in interface for A/D conversion that tend not to have best drivers. In any case, the place to start would be to increase the buffer size in audio preferences.
