Audio Engine Hangs and won't close down after Sonar 8.5.3 Terminates

I keep having a problem when Sonar crashes SONARPDR.exe wont shut down. No matter what I do. I have to reboot in order for it to go away. Is there any fix for this. I am using Win 7 64 Bit.

Most of the time sonar will hang and not shut down because of a MIDI controller/interface that is hooked up to your pc. Try unhooking your MIDI and see what happens

It likely is a bitbridge problem.    If you go into the task manager after it has closed and end any instances of bitbriidge showing up AND then Sonar(xxx).exe. This shoud get you out of a reboot I think.

jBridge has what is called a dirty close work around that solves it. http://jstuff.wordpress.com/jbridge/
I costs around $20 or so but is well worth it if you are running quite a few 32bit plugins in 64bit.

I'd put my money on BitBridge as well since I also have to clean those out as well as Sonar.exe when that happens. Also note if it won't close out after you terminate the process, wait 5 minutes, Windows generally releases it and you don't have to reboot. Also know that it may be better to reboot anyway because I have had instances where it releases but then if I go back in Sonar, things start to get buggy and the problem of crashing gets worse.

I am x64 by the way and most of my crashes are around UAD plugins and Bitbridge.

Actually, those are both good suggestions.

@x86: One thing that helps is having the x86 windows all closed before shutting down sonar, but certain (not all) x86 plugs when open seem to hang host(s) (yup, even the unmentionable one lol)

@midi controller: Korg's are notorious for this in particular.

Hmmmm, we seem to be getting a lot of 8.5.3 posts over here.....is there some reason? Are they being ignored over on that side (I admit I'm totally wrapped up in X1 right now)

It does it in x86 so bitbridge can't be the issue.

Actually it was none of the above. I had been messing around with the drivers last night and set them to WASAPI. Cakewalk apparently didn't like this too much. I ended up having to open cakewalk with out a project open to access the audio settings then change it. What the hell is WASAPI anyway? (insert sushi joke here)

    WASAPI support
SONAR provides support for WASAPI (Windows Audio Session API), which is the new standard for
audio in Windows Vista and future Windows operating systems. Windows Vista SP1 or higher is
    required to use WASAPI.
The primary advantages of WASAPI are:
    • Better compatibility with consumer audio devices:
    • Supports a wide variety of audio devices, including newer WaveRT devices and legacy
    Windows audio devices.
    • Lets you use consumer audio devices that don’t have ASIO drivers or drivers that don’t work
    well under WDM.
    • Provides low latency access to audio devices.
    Using WASAPI in Windows Vista
WASAPI has four different modes of operation. SONAR supports WASAPI Exclusive mode using
event signaling, because this mode is best suited for audio programs.
In order to use WASAPI in SONAR, your audio device must have WDM drivers that Windows can
successfully communicate with, and the audio device must be enabled to work in Exclusive mode.
Exclusive mode is the default in Windows Vista and can be configured from your audio device’s
taskbar or Properties dialog in Device Manager. Consult your audio device’s manual if you need

So why would I use WASAPI? I was able to have my device play back one of the demo tracks that comes with Sonar 8.5 with no problems, but the next day I couldn't even get Sonar to open a project. Is there any advantage to using it?

You can shut it down.  It depends how adventurous you are.

When this happens to me, I do the following:

Open Task Manager, find the Process ID (PID) of SONAR.EXE in the Processes Tab (if Task Manager is not showing the PID then you can click View - Select Columns - check PID.
     - OR -
Go to Start, type "CMD" in the box and a dos window will open, then type "tasklist"

Either of the above will get you the PID of SONAR.EXE.  Although the latter is better because your next step will require you to be at the cmd prompt anyway.

Now, at the cmd prompt in the dos window, type "taskkill /PID[pid#] /F     So, for example, if SONAR's PID is 2812, you would type:  taskkill /PID 2812 /F

That will stop/kill Sonar without a reboot.

CAUTION: Be careful to ensure that you are typing the correct PID# into that command.  If you fat-finger the number it will kill whatever PID you accidently enter.   How do I know?   I'm not furnishing the details :)

    Good Luck
