Audio Engine turns off
Any workaround to this? For example, you plot some notes, play it and then stop. Continue to plot more notes but there's no sound because the audio engine turns off so gota constantly press the icon to turn it back on after playback to hear the sounds. 8.5.3, x64, Vista x64

somsto75, We need more information to try to help you. Please define your hardware (computer and audio interface) and software setup (OS, drivers)? Does the problem occur with any VST or project? Good luck.

hey bbent, yeah it happens with any VST and any project. I use maudio fast track but I also experienced this with a lynx aes16. The computer is an i7 920 with 4 g ram, very solid, very reliable. It's such an annoying issue ya know?

The audio engine most commonly "turns off" after failing to service the audio buffers in a timely manner for 250ms or more. This in turn is usually caused by badly-behaved hardware, often a network card, sometimes a video adapter, spyware or antivirus services. Try first increasing your buffer sizes, and if that doesn't help, or if you have to increase latency too much to be practical, use the DPC Latency Checker to see if it's a greedy hardware component that's stealing CPU cycles from the audio engine.
All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to. My Stuff

Nah my buffer is always on 1024 and I really don't have other issues or symptoms pointing to this being a problem. I did however still double check it with DPC and all is well. Plus my network card is off and I've no spyware or antivirus running. It's a minimal system ya know, built solely for audio.

Random behavior of the audio engine turning off has been with my use of Sonar for so long now, I take it for granted it'll just happen once in awhile. At least that's not terribly often for me. RB

I just read an article that explained how every PC can behave differently and it's easy to end up with a powerful computer that still misbehaves because of certain mismatched components. In other words specs mean little when it comes to smooth running audio workstations. It's more to do with the combo of hardware. This is why Macs ( were) so dependable, they were made from parts designed only for that machine. PC's are hobbled together from 100's of different possible parts. One of my computers it seems related to graphic card demand. Like when I drag stuff around fast. Like Randy, I'm so used to it I don't pay attention anymore. I would buy a new graphic card but seems a little glitch now and then is not worth it.

But isn't it amazing that Sonar is the only software I have issues with?

On this pc I've tried Reaper, Samplitude, Sonar. From my own experience and from others on other daws, sonar is the one that gives me the most grief. I also have to deal with a stuck note issue as well as this.

Years ago when a buddy of mine turned me on to Cakewalk/Sonar, he had lots of good things to say about it, that's what convinced me to go for it -Pro Audio 9 at the time. But he did have one warning - that I'd just have to get used to the audio engine pooping out, and the program crashing. According to him, all his musician friends also used Cakewalk, and they all had the same experience. So, after a number of years with the same thing going on version after version - you just get used to it! RB
