Audio Inputs/Outputs Greyed in Sonar X1d
After taking some time off I'm getting back into the studio. I was using Sonar 4 but bought X1 a few years back and finally installed it last week. I'm trying to get up to speed with X1 but hardware issues are slowing me down. My DAW is running Windows XP SP3, 4 GB RAM, Intel Core 2 Quad 3.0 GHz. I have two M-Audio Delta 1010LT PCI audio interfaces that X1 sees and I had no issues with them with Sonar 4. I installed a Firewire PCIe card and connected my M-Audio Firewire Solo audio interface. All three audio interfaces are installed properly and Windows Device Manager reports that they are working fine. Sonar 4 Sees both Delta 1010LT interfaces but not the Firewire interface. Sonar X1d sees all three interfaces but the Firewire Solo is greyed out. I've looked and can't find a way to enable the Firewire Solo interface. Sonar X1 will not let me check the box to enable the FireWire Solo input or output. Why is it greyed out and how do I fix it? Thanks! The Delta 1010LT inputs are connected to mic connectors in the live room. I want to use the Firewire Solo to record my guitars in the control room.

The ASIO specification only permits access to one driver at a time. It would appear the Delta driver supports more than one board. I doubt the Firewire solo uses the same driver. It may be possible to connect the Firewire solo via S/PDIF connection in the back of the unit.

Thanks! The Delta 1010 uses a special version of the 1010 driver that supports 2 Delta 1010 cards in a PC. The M-Audio Firewire Solo has it's own driver so they should work independent of each other. I can't find any documentation that explains greyed out audio interfaces in Sonar X1.

Humm. Thanks. How is the driver selected? I never indicated to Sonar to use the Delta 1010 over the Firewire. Why does Sonar default to the Delta 1010 interfaces as opposed to the FireWire interface? Is there an easy way to force Sonar to default to the FireWire interface and greyout the Delta 1010? Seems to me there should be a switch in Sonar that when there are multiple audio interfaces (ie drivers) you can select the driver you want to use. I will never use them at the same time. Un-selecting 16 check boxes is a PITA.

Here are a few ideas, don't select all 16, only select the ones you want to use. The bottom line is only one driver will be available at a time when using ASIO. Maybe WDM would work better it does not have the one driver restriction, there may be other issues mixing interfaces thought. I had a FW Solo and remember there was no difference between the ASIO and WDM driver performance. Or create two separate AUD.ini files for each device configuration and swap them out before launching SONAR. AUD.ini stored in your user directory, "C:\Users\yourUserName\AppData\Roaming\Cakewalk\SONAR X1 Producer." Another solution may be to connect the FW Solo through the S/PDIF connection, I have never had the gear to test that type of setup but both the Delta and FW Solo have the connectors.

When Windows starts it enumerates all the devices connected to your computer and it just depends on which way it sees your 2 devices. There is no way to change that order. The only thing you can do is to power off the device you don't want to use and allow the other one to be selected at boot up.

It would be handy if it were possible to power off the devices. Unfortunately, the Deltas are internal interfaces only the FW Solo has the ability to run off external power.

Thanks. The issue is the Delta 1010 interfaces are PCI cards and there is no way to "power off" the cards. How Windows sees them really should not matter to Sonar. Sonar knows there is an issue - it chooses to use one and grey out the other. I would think that Sonar would let the user decide which interface should be used. Or provide a simple way to switch interfaces. I'll play with WDM drivers and see if that is a workaround. And I will contact M-Audio to see if they have any ideas.

Also if you use a 6 pin FW cable the Solo gets it's power from the FW interface - no AC adapter is needed. To turn off you have to unplug the FW cable.

Yes, I know. I still have one in a box somewhere. There are ways to automate the device selection using batch files to swap out AUD.ini files before starting SONAR or autohotkey scripts to automate the preferences setting selections. That about exhausts all the possibilities I can think of.

Try to deselect the Delta drivers and select the Firewire one. You may need to use a different driver model to get back to ASIO on the Firewire.

Well that's just the way it is unfortunately. It wasn't ever designed to be used in conjunction with other devices besides multiples of other 1010s. A total of 4 if I remember.
Why is it that you need to use the other device? Has it to do with inputs as the deltas don't have XLR connectors or some other reason.
