Audio Interface

Hi forums, So I'm doing some upgrades for my studio. I am about to sell a Mixing Console that has a built in FW Audio Interface (ProjectMix I/O) and go with some Avid Artist Series Mixers and Transport. But since these guys don't have audio interfaces built in, I'll need to get something to output my audio. My question is; do you guys use FW Audio Interfaces? On a rack? Or do you guys use soundcards? I don't do any instrument recordings whatsoever and use it purely for audio output and a few vocal mics (Which are not super important). I largely use VSTis and softsynths to write orchestral music. I'm not sure if I want to do a USB Interface as the latency bothers me tremendously. Any suggestions? Thanks.

My interface is my mixer and that's FW (ZED-R16). That'll run all day at 64 samples 1.5 msec with a roundtrip of around 5msec.

I think anything USB2.0 will be as quick or even quicker but obviously price and how good the drivers are will be a factor.

I use a Focusrite USB output which also has 2 mic/inst/pad inputs. Have not been able to use the inputs to record into cakewalk though. it mixes into the output to speackers only. I just Got a Zoom R8 and in the usb mode the two inputs record into Cakewalk and output cakewalk to mixer. This is handy but is not an instant on and go set up. each time I have to switch the zoom over to Usb before starting up cakewalk. Both solved the issue with the clicks and pops the computer sound card was producing. My only problem is I can not get both the focusrite and the zoom to work together in Sonar Producer 7. When I have the focusrite connected the Zoom R8 is grayed out in audio setup.

ASIO is not designed to work with multi interface, especially of different makes.

Some interface can be daisy chained with it's own/related models.

You may also get extra inputs of different makes if there is a digital in/out SPDIF, but I have not tried this yet.
