Audio Interface suggestions

Hey guys.  I normally only record myself and/or 1 -2 people at a time (mostly vocalists).  Until recently, I never had much need to expand my inputs on my interface.  I currently use the M-Audio ProFire 610 and am looking to upgrade.

I would like a professional interface with 8-16 inputs and low latency.
My midi devices are connected straight to computer now adays, so I don't need midi inputs.
USB/Firewire - doesn't matter

I know I can quickly and cheaply upgrade my inputs with a ProFire 2626, but if I am going to spend money, I would rather buy a significant upgrade in the sound quality department.  (Although the pre's on the ProFire are pretty nice)

Any and all thoughts are appreciated.

Well, I have no opinion about other USB devices, because I bought a RME Babyface USB2.0 interface and that is what I use and have not used other similiar audio/interfaces. But then I guess I would just say then look around and read about those interfaces and in the end decide for yourself.

I guess I am not understanding what kind of inputs you want, all XLR for mics or combination inputs or the usual 2-4 mic inputs and instrument inputs combinations and of course a hi-z input 1 or 2 for guitar.

(not the only place to buy).

I would not get firewire device because of problems I have read about with using those in the end and especially now with Windows 8.

    Mike,

it really comes down to how much you have to spend.  I've been very happy w/ my TC Konnekt 48 - and it will do what you want if you buy a few more preamps (it comes with four but 8 line inputs).  Of course, it is FW only which makes it less acceptable for lap tops.  But if you are on a desktop, it is a good deal.  12 X 8 analog plus a master out, ADAT smux and built-in dsp.  The reverb is sweet -  from the TCK 4000 and 2 stereo channel strips which are both pro.  Conversion is right up there - esp. since you can find them new from $1000.

There is RME. + $1000.  Or if you want to go for broke the Lynx 8/8 w/ USB is about $2000.  You'll never have to say you're sorry w/ that unit, and you can add preamps of your choice.  The rane or m-audio dsm (or whatever) are cheap and good, as is the Yamaha 8x premap, and you could mix in some better preamps since you are doing a couple of tracks at a time mostly.  The ISA One is a great deal, but I don't use mine as much since I got the Warm WA12.  More vintage sounding - just right on electric guitars esp.  Like converters and everything else, there is the point of diminishing returns.  Still,  I mostly track with the RND Portico Channel strip now, but it comes w/ everything as a channel strip should - eq, comp, deesser.  The preamp isn't that much better than those I listed above.  You pay for it, but if something doesn't sound good through it the hardware ain't to blame.

Just don't expect new hardware to jump out at you soundwise.  Well, it does, but that is mostly expectation.  But once you start using better gear, the little things become obvious as your ears learn, and then you learn to use the edges of your new toy.

    Good hunting!

I use RME. I love it. It comes with internal fx like eq, compression, reverb, and delay. It also comes with rooting software called total mix and analysis software called digicheck. The package is easy more than the package that came with my m-audio device. So my message is consider the extras.

StudioCat > I use Windows 10 and Sonar Platinum. I have a touch screen.
I make some videos. This one shows how to do a physical loopback on the RME UCX to get many more equalizer nodes.

Focusrite Scarlett 18i6. Good price and quality. You can follow a pattern like I do perhaps where you can still use your M-Audio Profire gear to feed through the ADAT input. The Scarlett has a user friendly interface as well as excellent sound.

Two internal 2TB SSDs laptop stuffed with Larry's deals and awesome tools. Studio One is the cat's meow as a DAW now that I've migrated off of Sonar. Using BandLab Cakewalk just to grab old files when migrating songs.
