Audio Snap issue - am I just missing something?

Hi y'all.

I have not tried to do this for about 5 years, but was trying to help a friend out that also uses Sonar, and in the process of trying to help him, I cannot replicate my results from 5 years ago, and I also do not see where Audio Snap is working correctly.

SO - my friend has a bunch of old projects that were recorded without a metronome, on some other device, and everything imported (up to 16 tracks) into Sonar projects.  What he is trying to do is get Sonar to map project tempo to any variations from the imported 'live' recordings.

I had recalled using a function within Audio Snap to to this, under Tempo. the function button says Set Tempo From Clip.  This is supposed to build a tempo map for the Sonar project, from detected tempo in the selected audio clip.  (I have a whole track selected, from an imported audio song file).

SO, I recalled that the 5-years back time I did this, it showed only a small number of tempo variations for the song, but did correctly determine the tempo, and inserted tempo changes in the project to match what it detected in the imported audio.

NOW, when trying to use this functionality, no matter what imported audio into an audio track I select, the tempo it is detecting is CRAZY high - Yes's Heart of the Sunrise (selected because it does change tempo a few times - they used to call it 'breathing'), anyways that song was determined to have a tempo of nearly 900 beats per minute, AND there are precisely 2 entries in the tempo map for the project, after running that Audio Snap Set Tempo to Clip, with both tempos for the entries being identical.

I do NOT understand how to use that function in Audio Snap properly, OR something with it doesn't work right, and I am hoping someone can guide me through getting that function to do what is needed.

may bet better results with Melodyne ARA tempo extraction.

Yup - might be.  I will be trying that out next.  I just remember Audio Snap DID do its tempo detection and adjusting in the Sonar project way back when, so that is why I am confused about it now. Tried Audio Snap in both X3 and Platinum, same results.

If all the tracks are aligned, the quickest method is to work against a percussion track, tab to transient and Set Measure/Beat at Now (Shift-M) where it drifts.

If recorded to a metronome, set the project BPM close at first, and you may get away with scooting the first downbeat to the right and simply doing a few Shift-Ms every few bars. If really lucky can just set the end of the project (if tempo is constant throughout).

Edit: Forgot to mention to Shift-M that first down beat after aligning it to grid. Shift-M is like driving nails into a rubber band (the audio track)... you need the front end nailed too.

Thanks, Mettelus - I may try that out, if using Melodyne comes up short.

I've tried the Melodyne trick with mixed results. Honestly, mapping tempo in realtime listening to the click against the original track drawing in the tempo track is by far the most accurate and my personal favorite method. It never fails. It takes a lil patience, but with practice you'll get faster and faster. It's worth the effort to learn. I've gotten super fast at it over the years! 😊
