Audio Technica M50s Headphones....incredible...

Just got a new set of ATH-M50S headphones from Audio Technica...on sale now at my local GC for only $130.00 during the 4th of July sale.  These are now industry standard and once you put them on and listen to any program material you'll know why.  They are amazing.  Especially for the price.  I urge you to go to your local GC or where ever and give them a critical listen.  Just dandy.

ugh... I wanted those but couldn't afford them. Got the Senn HD-280s instead. They're pretty snazzy themselves though.

Anyone knows if this model suffers from the peeling off of the cushion's vinyl as cheaper models? I have this problem with my m40f's.
Also how they compare to the m40f's??

    Thanks

I generally agree, but I think the M50s sound TOO good. They have too much bass. It's not boomy bass, it's really GOOD bass, just too much of it. They're awesome, pure-enjoyment headphones, but I'd never use them for any sort of mix decisions. Not that myolpal or anyone else said anything about using them for that. By all means, get some and enjoy them.

Well Steve, ol pal, I actually do use them as another reference when mixing.  Though I have to agree that the bass is good I don't think it is too pronounced.  And, apparently, many mix engineers throughout the industry agree and use them as mix references as well.  That's what makes a horse race:-)  Just yesterday I loaded up three of the songs from my latest procect and A/Bd them against both my KRK V6 Series IIs and my Equator D5s.  It was fairly scary how close they were.  I still think for regular mixing it's the KRKs...for detailing it's the D5s...and to "just be sure" it's the M50s.  But for $130 (heck even $160) you cannot go wrong with these babies.

@Anubis...they make a model with the standard short "coiled cord" as well.

Of course I stumble upon this thread just when I sit down with my newly bought AKG, freshly out of Sam Ash. Though strangely enough they don't seem to carry AT headphones. :S

Oh well, I dig these new one anyway - plus I'm just so used to AKG...

Those are supposed to be in the same league as the ATs (my retailer knew the headphones I was looking at and recommended them as an alternative). I almost bought them but I wanted fully closed back in case I ever need to track acoustic drums again so I bought the Senns. I'm curious how they work out for you because I may snag some in the future for an alternate reference source. Cheers.

After more than 3 years of daily use, my M50s show no signs of peeling, compared to my M40fs which are much older and have peeled somewhat around the ears. Also, the M40fs are much brighter than the M50s and I use them for listening only and always check my mixes with the M50s. You can't go wrong with the M50s, but I suggest you take the time to try out different brands to make sure you are comfortable with your final choice.

Great to know that M50s are better quality!! I like my M40fs for tracking but the peeling is bad!!

That stuff peeling off is par for the course on many cans..... I have a radio shack pair that did it and now my Yamaha's are almost finished peeling too.

Can you guys not replace the ear pads on those headphones? I can replace the the pads and the cord fairly easily on the HD280s. I thought you could do that with most pro headphones.

I adore my M50s for reference and for tracking.

I check my mixes on M50's, Sennheiser IE6 buds and my Ultimate Ears In Ear Reference Monitors (they are extremely flat) as well as my Mackie HR824s. I only use my Sennheiser HD-600s on the non DAW side of the room. You could say they too are used to check my mix but only after all the others pass muster.

I've been using my M50s with my iPod recently while travelling to work.  Apart from great sound quality, they also keep my ears warm in the cold weather.  They tend to drain the battery quite quickly though.  I get less than 2 hours before it dies.

Personally/Professionally i would not use anything other than some Sennheiser HD-280 Pro's, but my wife, i think in an odd joke brought these Incipio F38 headphones home for me....ironically enough they sound amazing. But surely will deteriorate the longer their used..im pleasantly surprised with them...

I love mine. I read that Focusrite used M50s as one of the reference headphones when they designed the VRM, and suggest M50s as a monitor phone for the VRM.

Man oh man... I went over to a friend's place last week. I was surprised to see that his monitors were basically against the bay window until he told me that these were his spare monitors and that he did all his mixes using "these headphones"

He handed then me his AT M50 and pressed play. I swear it almost brought tears to my eyes. They are stunning.

Good thing is that when my wife saw the look in my eyes, and she added the M50 to the potential gifts list. ;)

Have they stopped making ATH-M45? I bought M45 3 years back and it's still as good as new except for little peel. I love these headphones. I did a comparison when I bought and the price difference between 45 and 50 was very high. It's still high (I just checked on some shopping sites). Whereas difference in spec is not that huge. Check them once it will save you some money.

I rarely mention it, because it frowned upon, but I do exactly the same. The sound in this room is pretty hopeless for mixing (bass goes straight out the window) so I only use my Tannoy Reveals once in a while. I do 95% of my mixing using the M50's.

I think it's worth letting it out.

I was never a big fan of mixing w/ cans for obvious reasons, and the commonly accepted notions certainly seemed to hold some water. After over a year on the road however, I have had to learn and try my best - my monitors aren't exactly up to the task either, and listening environments are what they are.

I've started using Redline Monitor to help me sort out the stereo imaging issues that made it harder to mix w/ headphones, and, overall, using the cans and the small monitor, I managed to keep things relatively flat and good sounding.

One thing that struck me when I put on the AT on was that the stereo imaging was already quite good on its own. I'd be curious to test them w/ Redline Monitor.

My wife had already told me about a famous record producer/mix engineer she'd worked w/ back home who mixes w/ cans all the time. I thought she was exaggerating.

But after hearing the AT for myself, I actually believe that they can do the job. I mean, that guy isn't an amateur, he does that for a living, and he himself told me that it was another pro mix engineer who'd turn him onto the AT.

The good news is that, since we'll all be working together, my wife just told me that we'll need to get the AT too.

It'd surely be a big plus here, because I'm surrounded by windows. The view is amazing though...

This sounds very good, guys.  I'm usually beaten soundly and tossed in the nearest dumpster for suggesting that mixing can be done on headphones in some circumstances.  Some of us don't have the money or space for a well-treated room and flat reference monitors.  Some are stuck with cement floors and cinderblock walls.  Some have family considerations that make full volume monitoring impossible.

I'm glad to hear that more people are working around the limitations imposed by headphones to get good mixes.  I'm also glad none of you are ending up in a dumpster.  I'm going to go hop in one now, just to be safe.
