Audio (WAV) editor for use as a Utility with Sonar Platinum?
Morning all - I was wondering if anyone had a recommendation for a decent (but affordable; just a hobbyist here ...) WAV editor that could be added to the Utilities menu and used inside of Sonar Platinum, running on a Windows 8.1 machine? I tried Adobe Audition 3.0 - which has some nice features, and a GREAT price - and while it can be added to the Utilities menu, I never could get it to actually launch inside of Sonar. Thanks! RR

The only time I have read about issues launching an audio editor from the Utility menu the causes were: typos in the registry entry or a permissions problem. When running SONAR as administrator, Audition must be set to run as administrator too.

A great free audio editor which works well is Audacity. It also has a great set of plugins that have been developed for it. Also free. When you're ready to add it to Sonar's tools menu go here for SonarToolsEditor to do it properly. Http://Forum.Cakewalk.com/Findpost/3238243

RR - Audition 3 works fine from the SONAR Utilities menu. Check scook's advice and either run SONAR and Audition as administrator, or both "not as administrator". Have you got the registry settings correct?

Actually soundforge 11 works just fine, called from within Sonar 64 bit... there are instructions somewhere on this forum for how to add the reference to the registry. Here's the link. http://www.cakewalk.com/S...e-to-SONARs-Tools-menu

Thanks guys - Got Audition 3.0 working fine. The key seems to have been making sure Sonar & Audition were both set to run as Administrator. Appreciate the help!

Mike, I've installed Audacity and all seems well (very cool), I've downloaded SonarToolsEditor, but when I was going install it, I wondered if there's a specific place where it's ideally to put the Exe Path & I have no idea of what to put the required Menu Text field. I read through scook's thread and did a search, but if anyone knows please excuse my ignorance. Thanks.

It does not matter where you put the SONARToolsEditor.exe. I put it in the Cakewalk "Shared Utilities" folder. If you set "Update Registry" to yes, a button is added to the SONARToolsEditor UI to add SONARToolsEditor to SONAR. It fills out all the fields based on where ever the SONARToolsEditor.exe was run. It is not necessary to add this tool to the Utilities menu. When it comes to Audacity, use the browse button to the right of the "Exe Path" and navigate to the audacity exe. The menu text could be anything but I would suggest "Audacity". Adding an ampersand in front of a letter makes that the accelerator key. For example "&Audacity" would bind ALT+U+A to launch Audacity. ALT+U is predefined to open the Utilities menu.

That does not seem right. Version 9 and 10 work fine with SONAR. I am pretty sure I have helped users of SF11 fix up the registry entry for SONAR. The tool I recently wrote might help. It does not matter that SF is a 32bit application, at least when communicating with 64bit SONAR.

Just an aside. I got frustrated with Sound Forge. it's true I just had the baby one, but yuk, not too much to like IMHO. So back to Audacity, which at least makes sense and works well. Not to say it's not me, but with Audacity I'm fine, so I'll have SF around (but not installed) for Redbook if ever needed.

As much as i agree with Sony being slack about 64-bit. soundforge works within Sonar just fine.

Completely incorrect. Sound Forge links perfectly well with Sonar x64. The programs don't actually connect. Sonar just creates a copy of the specified audio file, and sends an instruction for the editor to open (SF in this case) with that copy of the file loaded with any highlighted audio also highlighted in the editor. It's like giving a virtual double click to that file copy and using the editor as the default program, so whether that program is 32 bit or 64 bit is irrelevant. If you want to add this function into Sonar use scook's SonarToolsEditor utility. 100% works. Available (along with many other useful Utilties created by our members) via the link in my signature.

Try it with a whole audio track. There maybe a clip format problem. That will tell you if that's the case
Let us know how you go.

I have the same question about using Audacity ~ It will open from the Sonar menu with the selected audio just fine, but for the life of me I can't figure out how to save the edited audio back into Sonar - it seems Audacity just wants to export to a new file or save to a project on the hard drive. Adobe Audition is seamless, and saves right back into Sonar. Probably overkill, but it would be nice to be able to use both editors as desired - just because ...

I think the problem with Audition could be that it doesn't work natively with wav files. It uses a proprietary format and I'm not sure whether wavs are converted immediately when imported in which case the audio file would not be recognised by Sonar for the return. I'll put it on my list of things to test.
