Audio dropping out during recording

Just recently I realized I was recording at 16 bits instead of 20 (yeah, I'm kicking myself... hard) so today I decided to do a little recording to see if I could tell the difference. Well, for the first time ever, when I'm recording, audio from tracks that I've already recorded on just drops out for a second or two and comes back. The metronome keeps right on going, it's just audio from previous tracks. I've never experienced this before, so I'm thinking maybe it has something to do with recording at 20 bits now. Am I thinking on the right track here?

When I playback audio I've recorded there are no drop outs, it's only when I'm recording new audio.

I'm using Sonar 4.0 with the latest patch installed. Layla 20 for audio input. P4 2.0 gig, 1 gig of ram. I've never had this happen before today.

Many of us that use Sonar for a business are desparately hoping the upcomming Sonar 4.04 patch will solve this issue.

    Funny thing
Since I updated my Bios and Video drive I havent had any more dropouts
Although, I havent tried multiple track recording since
Hopefully the 4.0.4 patch with be the end all be all
    Until S5, that is
I hear they'll be coming out at the same relative time

    SC:

If you've searched - there are tons of dropout threads - are you using WDM or ASIO / I've never used the Layla so I don't know what control you have.

I really... really... really... let me emphasize this, REALLY hate when people tell others in some condesending way they should have used the search function before posting, as if you're some enlightened person who knows of this great wonder of the world called "Search". I know about the search function, and none of the ones I read had anything to do specifically with what I'm experiencing.

    I'm using WDM.

I figured out more information that might help someone who wants to help me figure this out. I didn't experience the dropouts while recording a single track. It only happened when I was recording drums, which means I had 7 tracks armed and recording. when I was only recording guitar it was fine.

But hey, as long as this is a known issue and I'm not the only one experiencing it I won't sweat it. As long as it doesn't have anything to do with me recording at 20 bits as opposed to 16. I had be recording at 16 for about 6 years before I realized I was dumb... :P

Sorry to go off on you Don, it's nothing personal. This is a pet peive of mine and has been for years.

I am sorry if you took my post as condescending - there is nothing in my post that indicates as such. Your original post seemed not to have much specific data in it - again I'm sorry if you considered my post condesending but it seems like you've been to starbucks a bit too much No offense taken.

Hmm! It is really .... really .... really ... let me emphasize this, REALLY nice when people post enough information that we know what their problem is and what they have tried to fix it (including reading the manual and searching the forum) so we don't waste our time duplicating stuff that they've already tried.

Hmm... well I guess I could have included more information, but I was in the middle of a session and I figured I'd get the question out there as quickly as possible.

I gave all the information I had at the time... and STILL have. I was recording at 16 bit, now at 20. So that's the latest thing to change > for troubleshooting the latest thing to change is the most important, therefore this is a very valuable peice of information. And then I gave my computer specs just for the curious, but since I've had this computer for three years with no problems it's really Irrelavant.
