Audio files re-named in back-up, i cant find it!

Some years ago i archived my project on dvd's (per-project, audio folder and project file). Now i cant open it because all the audio files have changed the name and my x3 cant find it! The "missing audio files" window does not work. Some name is very similar but in case of projects with many and many audio files it's impossible to recognize the files. HELP...some ideas?

"all the audio files have changed the name"

I don't understand this bit, how were the filenames changed?

How are you trying to open your projects? 2 ways spring to mind, double clicking the dvd entry from Windows Explorer or by doing a File > Open from X3

Did you try moving the folder from the DVD to the corresponding folder on the HDD first?
OTOH, shouldn't the Project file in the Per Project folder include the paths of that particular Project?
Speculating/guessing: could it be SONAR looks for the audio in the HDD folder, but if the Project is opened from the DVD, it gets confused??

"Changing names" of the audio makes me think of backup software, which rename the data in order to be retrieved By the same backup software only. Did you use a backup software or did you just copy the files on the DVD?

SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre  -  Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc.

Re: Audio files re-named in back-up, i cant find it! 2015/09/22 04:15:44 (permalink)
hello and thanks, of course I copied the project file and folder audio from DVD to 'hd inside before reopening the project. When I back up I simply mastered the project file and its folder to DVD audio. I did not use any special software to back up. Obviously the problem is not "how to open" a project sonar! In practice, when I open the project (the HD copied internal) sonar x3 tells me I can not find the audio files. I do make a search but did not find them because the project folder and sound have slightly different names (eg. "1 drum track" vs. "TRACK1_"). For some files it is easy to recognize the name, but for others it is impossible. I think, indeed I am sure, that the backup was made with a previous version of sonar, perhaps even 8.5. The files are all there, I see them, but the different name (shorter?) Means that x3 does not recognize them as those "project" and is not able to associate. I thought to locate them "by hand" based on the length, but it is a big job and I do not know what value to use for comparison. Has anyone encountered a similar problem on the opening back up between different versions of Sonar? Thank you so much for the help

What you should have done was to do a "Save As", selecting your DVD drive as the destination and ensuring "Copy Audio With Project" is ticked.

You could have even done the Save As to your desktop and then burn them to DVD from there.

As it is, I can't see a way other than trying to do it all manually.

How many projects are you talking about?

Hello, it is own the one which I have made! Creed that the problem is not the procedure of rescue or back up, but the passage between various versions sonar. Unfortunately draft of many plans that I would want to recover… other ideas?

I do not understand what this means.

Kind of sounds like the WAV files were written to DVD as DVD-Audio tracks. Not much to be done about that other than ripping them back to .WAV in the correct format, and listening to each to figure out what it is. Saving a separate copy of the project with the dummy audio that SONAR inserts when missing files are skipped on opening might help to cross-reference by showing the length/size and track assignment of each missing file. You'll have to bounce each clip to generate an actual dummy audio file, and make sure the project settings are consistent with the format of the files from DVD so that their kbps rates are the same.

Sorry, my English is not perfect, i use a translator automatic, perhaps are thus not explained to me well. Obviously the back up has been made in the right way, not files audio on dvd audio, I have mastered like data the rows plan and the relative folder "audio", and i find everything on dvd. In order to reopen the plan, I copy all on the PC and then reopen the project file… but the files audio has a slightly different name, thus the plan hard work to find them. In fact it asks me to make the search, then, not findig the files, put silence-regions in the project.

I think that different versions of sonar use different names for the audio content, or a different way to name them, so x3 can't find audio files named, for exemple, in 8.5. Possible? Someone meet the same problem?

Filenames reverted to 8.3 somewhere along the line?

I think so...for exemple, the project opened in x3 look for an audio file called "1 track drum", but in the audio folder that same file is called "1TRACKD_" so it can't import it during the search process. I'm not sure the exact version used for the back up...surely 8.5, x1 or x2.

So it looks like the problem is that the backup software used the short filenames (DOS/8.3) rather than the long ones (NTFS/FAT32).  I think you're out of luck and will need to rebuild the hard way - at least the first 6 characters of the filename will be the same...

I can open "all" 10 years old Projects without any problem from my backup.

First: If you have copied the files from DVD go sure, that the files on your HD are not attribute "read-only".

Otherwise, something goes unfortunately wrong with the backup.
The Project-filename do not coresspond to the audio-files and do not go together

Sadly, i think the same way! I hoped someone with the same problem had a better solution...but probably it does not exist! Many and many thanks to you!
