Audio interface recommendation for Sonar Platinum
Hi, My old cakewalk UA-25EX has died due to windows 10 and drivers, I have given up trying to bring it back to life and wonder if the community can recommend a good replacement audio interface (if needed I don't mind spending a little extra to have an improved model) I do not have a sound card in the PC but it is a bit of a beast to support my VR projects, in case that is a factor. I need midi for my hardware synths but not a large number and obviously need the sound generation for soft synths. Thanks in advance.

I can only recommend based on my experience. I bought a Roland Studio capture quite a few years ago. It had very good reviews and at the time cakewalk was owned by Roland so it seemed like a good choice. It has been excellent, no problems whatsoever it a;lso works without issue with everything else I have tried it with. Ableton live, pro tools. There are a number of interfaces with differing capabilities in this range.

Presonus or Steinberg both have good alternatives and your probably going to need their software one day.

Roland Quadcapture works fine, too - if the Studio capture would be a little bit oversized for you. If you use the cheap cables, pull and plug them sometimes to avoid hiss. Plug-/contact-Oxidation is evil sometimes ;-)

Hi! I can recommend "ANTELOPE AUDIO" professional audio interfaces. Of course it very pricy and not recommended if you have a budget but it sounds fantastic. If you consider what you get, then it very cheap and have the best stable clocking on the market.
ANTELOPE AUDIODigital clarity / Analog warmthAntelope Audio has packed more than 20 years of experience in digital audio clocking, conversion and analog circuit design. We are dedicated to helping people achieve high-definition sound both in the recording studio and home environment. You probably know it from Antelope’s signature crystal-based master clocks, that clock even our competitors products.

RME have great stuff. I have a Fireface 800 since about a decade now. RME still keep updating the drivers for it. Great company.

The best bang for the buck, quality to price is the Focusrite Scarlett line. You can get a new Scarlett 214 second gen for 150.00 US dollars. They are very good about keeping their drivers up to date.

Indeed - The Focusrite devices are great. Personally I do not like USB devices very much, because a lot of the cheaper ones have a high latency (and crackling and popping when you try to go lower), but the Focusrite ones are very decent. Make sure you have the latest generation tough, because the older(1.1) versions have some USB problems. Personally I like firewire devices better. I still use an old MOTU Traveler (yes - first gen) with a TI interface under Windows 8.1, and it has a real low latency while it's rock steady. The MOTU interfaces are not the cheapest (although cheaper than RME), but have a real high quality. That said - This are, of course, my personal experiences.

That Cakewalk interface was great though wasn't it? I had the same unit, bought as a package with Sonar Studio 6 and it lasted happily until a year or so ago. Even then, it was still possible to get working under W10 and a few driver waltzes. It will depend on what you need in terms of channels etc, but in my case I went for the RME BabyFace Pro. Excellent unit - costly but it does what it's supposed to do. Never crashes with the DAW (which oddly the Cakewalk unit used to do not infrequently), and it works just as flawlessly with Studio One as you'd expect.
Wood Studio One 3 Pro, (Sonar Platinum), Intel i7, Win10 Pro, 32Gb ram, RME Babyface Pro, Behringer X-Touch, Presonus Faderport, Akai MPK49, Arturia KeyLab25, KRK Rokit 5 monitors, and other sonic surprises.

I would recommend to check your UA25ex again. Mine works fine with Windows 10. If it is really really dead, Windows 10 is rather not a blame. One day I will replace mine with ZOOM UAC-2, or Focusrite Scarlet 6i6. Or Antelope Discrete 4 (if GAS hits me hard).

I've used many USB audio interfaces over the years, and the one I'm sticking with now is the Focusrite Scarlett 18i8 second generation. Great sound quality, low latency, MIDI IN/OUT and great free effects bundle offers. Previously I had the Presonus 1820VSL. Great sound quality, but its USB implementation was horrible. Constantly conflicting with other USB devices. But it did come with a version of Studio One, which I installed and discovered totally paled in comparison to Sonar. I would absolutely not worry about having to match an interface to work a particular DAW. All interfaces should work with any DAW you use, since a DAW connects with the interface's drivers (usually ASIO). Nothing proprietary at all there.

I'm using a UA-25EX on Win 10 with no issues. What type of problems are you having? Actually, I did have one issue...the Hi Def Audio on my graphics card will interfere with the UA-25EX (SONAR will say it doesn't exist). The easy fix for this is to disable the Hi Def Audio on the graphics card.

I'd say go with anything RME, depending on how many inputs / outputs and pres you need, etc. The pres are great, the AD converters are fantastic and the drivers have a stellar reputation.

Hi. If budget allows, I say go for RME. They make excellent products, and support old devices. Perhaps 2nd hand? On the budget side (as Chuck mentioned), there is the Focusrite 2i4. All the best.

I have a MOTU 828es (and had a MOTU AVB Ultralite before that). If you don't have an X99 chipset, it works great and the feature set is incredible.

TASCAM us 20x20 is a good middle-weight contender. 10 X in and out (w/ 8 pres) + midi + digital, so it has most bases covered there. Good sound. Nice latency via USB 3. All the US-series share the same drivers, so they are likely to be kept up to date. $400. Not likely to outgrow it for the price.

I had a very bad time with the unusable M-Audio M-Track Quad, then bought a Behringer U-Phoria UMC-404HD. It has 4 x mic/line/instrument inputs and handles Midi in/out via a USB connection to your computer. In Windows 10, Sonar Platinum, I've recorded many recordings of 4 simultaneous 24-bit/48kHz inputs without a single glitch. (Interestingly, it works fine using WASAPI for 16-bit, but I had to switch to WDM/KS mode for 24-bit mode ...) Last night I installed Presonus Studio One demo and tested recording, and again was able to record 4 simultaneous 24-bit/48kHz inputs without a glitch. So I highly recommend the Behringer! It's very affordable as well ... just $100.

I've used many interfaces over the years, most of them quite good. But I've recently moved to RME and I'll never look back. Best drivers in the business, IMHO, and great sounding hardware. If you can't afford their entry-level stuff, you can find used original Babyface units for pretty good prices. They work great, are durable, and RME strongly supports their older hardware.

You don't mention your budget, which for most people is a big factor. That is why you are getting suggestions that are all over the map cost-wise. Provide your budget, and that narrows down the field considerably. You may have also heard that Sonar is no longer in development... Something to think about as you shop for a new interface.

nickgorrell Hi, My old cakewalk UA-25EX has died due to windows 10 and drivers
My UA-25EX works fine with Win 10, drivers automatically downloaded when I plugged the interface in. I have over the years accumulated an Edirol UA-25EX, UA-101, Roland OctaCapture, QuadCapture, DuoCapture EXII, PreSonus, Tascam US1641, 1800, 16x08, 20x20, 2x2 and 1x2. Edirols are great but there are better pres around in newer gear. The 101 still serves as an interface for all my rack gear. I much prefer the new Tascams. Super low noise pres, no issues when connecting to other gear and low digital ground loop noise. I have always found Tascam quoted specs to be very conservative. Earlier drivers had latency issues but all that is fixed now. In general I have the impression Tascam releases the product before the drivers are ready, which damages their reputation unnecessarily. The Rolands are all microphonic when you tap them. The QuadCapture has a low hum on the instrument input which becomes audible when the track is compressed. The auto level setting concept doesn't work for me and the OctaCapture has especially high digital ground loop issues and has, perhaps for that reason, only 50dB gain max, but I use them for drums anyway (two can be used together). On the other hand, they all have drivers that work with XP, so I keep them for my mobile rig which is still XP. The Presonus drivers have issues with some of my audio programs and it shows a silly icon whether I am using it or not. After a second version was released with other issues (and no development done anymore), my Presonus now resides in my dud gear box. My first and last Presonus.
