Audio interface with XLR output
Does anyone know if such an interace exists ? A friend of mine asked, wants to connect powered monitors with XLRs directly to sound card. I know you can use phono to XLR converters, but he wants to just use XLR cables. JR

Does anyone know if such an interace exists ? I think that's what he is asking for. But he is looking for actual makes/models. The only ones I know of are some digital mixers/control surfaces/audio interfaces, usually on the expensive ($1000 and up) side of the road.

ORIGINAL: auto_da_fe Does anyone know if such an interace exists ? A friend of mine asked, wants to connect powered monitors with XLRs directly to sound card. I know you can use phono to XLR converters, but he wants to just use XLR cables. JR A Lynx Two card would be very nice for that application and has the best sound quality of any internal card. However, what you need is not "XLR" but "balanced" connections. They can be XLR or 1/4" TRS (Tip, ring, sleeve) to have all three contacts for balanced operation. Many sound cards use 1/4" TRS all you need is the correct cable if your monitors only have XLR. For example you could get TRS to XLR cables. Even the very low cost M-Audio Audiophile 192 has balanced outputs.

most of the E-MU products have balanced outs on 1/4" TRS - some state 'balanced' in the specs, others 'balanced, AC-coupled', still others 'servo-balanced, DC-coupled'... the subtleties of this are somewhat beyond me. The 1616m and the new USB boxes are 'balanced, AC-coupled' anyway. And they sound great.

Greetings Jeff, Most professional "sound cards" ( AKA audio interfaces) will have balanced outputs. These are often available as either XLR outputs or TRS (stereo ¼″ jacks). The TRS jacks can be connected with a balanced cable that has a ¼″ plug on one end and an XLR on the other, like this: Regards, David

All the cheap solutions have been mentioned already so here is an expensive solution: Get a DAC-1 from Benchmark. One of the best D/A converters for the money. Connect the sound card SPDIF to the DAC-1 and use the XLRs on the DAC out to your monitor. Eric

As said above, xlr or 1/4" is not the important question to ask. Balanced vs. unbalanced is! As long as the signal is balanced you can go from 1/4" trs to xlr with (see cable above). Dude

thanks all, my DSL has been down for a few days, so that is why I was so silent during all this. understood - balanced can be TRS 1/4 ", just need a cable that is TRS 1/4" ---> XLR. Thanks again. JR
