Audio problems with graphics on screen

When playing a music video on the internet, or any music on my hard drive using Windows Media Player with its graphic on screen, the audio is garbled with many dropouts/clicks and the tempo slows down.  If I minimize it so the graphic is not seen, or scroll the picture away from view, then the sound is okay.

This started after I replaced the hard drive and reinstalled Windows XP Professional, SP3.  Did not have this problem previously with the same graphics card, a Matrox G450 MMS which is running 2 monitors and has the latest drivers downloaded.  I know the problem is not the sound card since this happens with different sound cards.  I have a PC Pentium 4, 3.2, with 2GB of ram.  This happens whether I have a firewall activated or not.  I have tried disabling different hardware devices.  Have not even tried getting into my Sonar program yet.

This is driving me nuts.........any ideas?  Thanks.
