Audio restoration - getting rid of distortion?

Hi all,

I've got some trumpet tracks that were recorded too hot resulting in mild distortion (this is beyond a typically acceptable edgy sound). Re-recording is not an option, unfortunately. Any ideas for cleaning this up? Using tools like Vintage Warmer just makes the sound "woolier", and de-essing and EQ are only marginally successful. Anything that can read the core signal and dial it back a few notches?

    Hi Paul,

A "de-clipping" plugin might help if the distorted segments are short.
    • Samplitude and Audition include de-clipping tools.
    • Izotope RX2
    • I believe there's a free de-clipping plugin for Audacity

The distortion is throughout a 4min track, almost every note played. I've tried the Izotope de-clipper and not had much success. I'll give it another run, but I'm afraid I might be stuck.

    Jim,

I should add that the waveforms aren't necessarily clipped, most aren't in fact. I think the mic was overdriven, but the recording level of that nasty signal was ok.

    That's a tough one...

How complicated is the horn line?
You might be able to pull a little "MIDI wizardry" if you have some nice horn samples.

I have only heard of one way (hard) to reduce distortion (not digital clipping) on audio if re-recording is not an option.  For example if an electric guitar was recorded with a fuzz pedal and it is way to much "of the good thing" for the mix.  And that is to play the same notes as instrument on a midi, find some suitable clean sound,  and  mix it along with the original instrument (but lower in volume).
