Audio tracks are messing with my latency!

I have an Intel i7 system, 8GB RAM, M-Audio Audiophile 2496, latest drivers. Win 7 Home Premium SP1.  Sonar X1 Producer Expanded X1d Build 535.

When I record MIDI in a new project, no problem.  No detectable latency.

If I open a new project, and record some audio (my drum set) with no metronome, no regard for the default 120bpm in Sonar, the audio records fine, no problems at all.

If I add a virtual instrument, say the SI-Bass Guitar  that comes with Sonar, it plays fine until I start to record.  As soon as I start to record, the midi latency seems to be around 250 mS, which is of course unusable.  I've played with the 2496 control panel, but no difference.

Is this a problem with Sonar somehow detecting that the transients of my drum set playing are not near the metronome?

Thanks.
Dave

Are you using ASIO driver mode? Are you using 64 bit Windows 7? What do you have the latency set to? What is your buffers setting (should be 256 or 128).

    I'm using Win7 64-bit.

Yes, I'm using ASIO.  Setting the 2496 control panel ASIO buffer size to 256 or 128 makes no discernible difference.

I've tried different latencies.  Sonar has set ASIO to: Manual Offset: -171, and a check mark by "Use ASIO reported latency: 583"  Any variation on these settings seems to make no difference.

I've noticed that if I open a new project, there is no audible latency, even though the ASIO settings are the same.

It due to you using a plugin that does not compensate for latency or that causes latency.
Try a buffer of 64 or 96. If it doesn't help, then its a combination of the plugin, your pc, your drivers and you mobo most likely.

When I use any plugin in a new project, there is no perceivable latency.  This problem happened after I tried adding midi to an audio project.

I came across a short YouTube video of a person who has *exactly* the same problem as I am experiencing:

    Is anyone else experiencing this?

I've suffered with this too.  Usually clicking the PDC button helps.

Did you read the post under the youtube video? I quote:-

Verified Solution from Cakewalk: This latency is caused by the use of the linear phase plug-ins within the project. It is advisable to only incorporate these plug-ins after the recording is complete. You can continue working in this project with low latency by right-clicking each FX bin utilizing linear phase plug-ins and selecting "Bypass Bin". Then, reset the audio engine by clicking the Reset MIDI and Audio button on the transport bar.

    And:-

The problem was diagnosed and verified by Cakewalk customer support. My project uses "linear phase" plug-ins... which means that the software has to look ahead in time while rendering the sounds, which leads to the latency. By "bypassing" these types of plug-ins in my project, the latency is removed. Their advice is to record all your tracks and only add linear phase plug-ins for the mixing phase of the project.

Don't know if that helps you.  I'm sure you've already read it.

Just read the comments on that youtube video, and it says that Cakewalk says it is being caused by the use of linear phase plugins.  I'm not using any as far as I know.  Other than Sonitus plugins, I'm using the Vintage Channgel and the PX64 Percussion Strip.

However, I diabled all plugins, even deleted some.  Ther latency was gone.  The strange this is that as an experiment I undeleted all of my plugin changes so that everything was enabled again, and the latency is gone.  I'm happy, but this is strange!
