Audio-Technica ATH-M50 Headphones....
After reading lots of reviews and getting lots of opinions, I decided on getting these headphones to upgrade my current 15 year old Fostex T20's. I found a used pair on E-Bay for $105 with free shipping, which was much cheaper than the $159 plus tax new price at most stores. The seller says the headphones are like new and in very good condition, so we'll see. I decided I needed closed back headphones because with my mic setup I could hear the metronome from Sonar X1 bleed thru into my test recordings. I'm hoping the new headphones won't do this. Anyhow, I've read many great things about these headphones about being good bang for the buck headphones for a studio. I've been upgrading everything lately and it sure is making a nice difference !!

Jeez, we are like separated at birth. I had a pair of Fostex T20s; now using the M40s (the cheaper ones). Even the cheap ones are pretty good. @

hahaha...yep buying them used saved me about $60-70 bucks....so yes I am a cheapskate, but I look at like this, I'll now have about $60 bucks more to spend on other gear... Last week I bought a $200 office chair for my home studio used for $70, again it was like new...so I saved a pile of money there, which made it possible for me to get the headphones too.... I bought the upgrade to Sonar X1Studio while it was on sale and save about $50 bucks there...it all helps !!

AT Buying used works most of the time. @ I try to buy either new or slightly used most of the time, but on occassion I'll buy demo's or floor models to save a few bucks. I buy a lot of gear so anytime I can save a few bucks, it helps. A good quality set of headphones like the ATH-M50's should last a very long time so if they are a little used it shouldn't matter much. I'm more concerned that they don't bleed into my mics.

Well I recieved my M-50 headphones. They sound fantastic. I like them a lot. I did notice a problem with them however, the ear pads seem to be easily bumped off and you have to re-install them. I did a quick fix by putting a few drops of Gorilla glue on the ear pads to fasten them on to the base. That should keep them from coming off, we'll see. I've also heard that replacing the leather ear pads with velour pads is quite popular too. Either way they sound fabulous and are now my favorite headphones !! I did do the metronome test with them and it still bleeds thru but just a tiny tiny bit. Maybe if I turn down the metronome a little...

jamesg1213 ...got so used to them I wear them for watching movies & stuff too. I took my M50s with me on a long haul flight from UK to Australia and wore them for listening to the in-flight movies. Much more comfortable than the supplied disposable phones.

In comparison to the Fostex T20's the M50's are quite a bit louder. More detail. Overall sounds better, well worth upgrading. The Gorilla glue trick worked nicely, the ear pads are firmly attached to the base now. I turned down the metronome a little and the bleed thru stopped completely, but I can still hear it okay thru the phones. The M50's I got have the coil cord but a straight cord is available with a different model. I like the coil cord though, it cleans up the wiring a little in my studio. Perfect for a home studio like mine. :)
