That's a good price for some good headphones. Bitflipper turned me on to them a couple of years ago.

The consensus seems to be the 50's sound great. What's the rejection like. I'm looking for a good set of cans to track vocals and acoustic guitar. T

They are considered a "Studio Standard" and get 4 to 5 stars at every retailer...and are used in Recording schools all over the world as well. Are they the greatest? No, but even at the regular price of $159.99 (retail $199.99) these are excellent cans for the money IMO.... Here is a chart with the Isolation in upper right corner...

Tom, the ATH-M50's do sound good although they are a little bass-hyped. However, I don't think they are the best choice for tracking cans. Isolation isn't particularly great, and that hyped low end isn't going to help you nail your vocal pitch. The similarly-inexpensive Sennheiser HD280Pro does a much better job for tracking, offering superior isolation and a weak bass response that eliminates the need to roll off the bottom in your cue mix.

Same here. Those dern cans are aces. We also own a couple pairs of the HD280Pros. Very good too...but not even a close second to the ATs. YMMV.

I didn't say their isolation was bad, just mediocre. I've seen figures as poor as -9 dB, but although I've never made any measurements of my own I think they do better than that. The Sennheisers give you 28 dB broadband attenuation, comparable to so-called "active noise-cancelling" headphones. This ain't scientific, but I've carried both of them with me on airplanes and the Sennheisers proved to be superior in that environment.

Stoopid America and their stoopid America only deals ! ;) That's a great price for those - I already have some, cost waaay more than that, but they do have a 3yr warranty rather than 3 months, so I guess you pay your money and take your chances, but if I was on your side of the pond I would take that chance.

Well 1 person was wise enough to buy these.... Makeshift...I have 40's also and have been VERY pleased with them... my earpads are worn to foam...that's how well used they are...LOL and I've dropped them I don't know how many times...and they keep right on ticking... If the 50's are better...I'm going to be a happy camper...

Thanks for that tip, Larry. $11 with shipping (from China). I'd normally be reluctant to deal with a business in China, but the seller has 99% positive reviews, has been an eBay seller for 8 years, and the purchase has a money-back guarantee from eBay. And anyhow, my ears insisted that this purchase was necessary. Estimated delivery between 4/25 and 5/3; I'll report back when they arrive.

The wear on these headphone pads was gradual so I didn't really notice how uncomfortable they'd become until I put on other, cushier cans. I've got two less-used Sennheiser models, one (HD280Pro) with the same type of soft plastic pads and the other (HD-580) with deliciously cushy velour pads. Both are extremely comfortable, so when I subsequently put on the ATH-M50s it's like donning a scratchy sweater. Aside from the cushions getting ratty, I can't complain about the general ruggedness of the AT's. I've had these for almost 8 years as my day-to-day mixing/editing headphones and I've subjected them to a great deal of abuse. They've been dropped, sat upon, jammed into carry-on luggage and carried around the world several times.

Everywhere I've read about them they get high marks...for sound and durability. So that all bodes well...there is definitely a difference from my ATH-M40's... and those things were like a rock..so if these hold up as well...I'm good to go... Only thing wrong with my 40's is they need new earpads...but they still sound great...just not as good as the 50's. I paid the same for the 50's that I did for the 40's....go figure...

I've seen them even cheaper than prices quoted above. I paid a lot more for my M50s four years ago than they cost now and I didn't think they were bad value then. So now they are definitely worth the current price.

I've NEVER seen ATH-M50's for cheaper then $79 anywhere....they normally sell for $159... Not saying that it's not possible...but I monitor LOTS of sites and have never seen these cheaper... I've been waiting for 2 years for the price to be right to buy these...

I think my M-50's are amazing. I ultimately prefer my Grado's for listening to non-electro music, but for checking mixes through my VRM box the M-50's are ideal and immediately reveal any bass problems, and anything that has sub-bass or a heavy kick sounds amazing.
My only regret is that I have the coiled cable instead of the straight cable, if I bought a 2nd pair I'd get the straight. And mine does have a little wear at the connector which means that every now and then the sound cuts out and I have to push the wire back in - I can't remember how this happened but I suspect it was from standing too far from my interface to record a guitar part and I may have tugged them out. Which is why I should have got the straight cable....
