Auditioning notes in staff view

What's the proper way to do this now? The select tool doesn't do anything, and the smart tool sometimes accidently creates new notes as it auditions. Is there a special trick to this now?

Press J to use the Scrub tool. You can then click/drag your mouse over notes to audition them.
