…August Tele Heat Wave ...Fire Breathing Outlaw Telecaster

Hello  all,

Well , gulp , here's another Imperfect Sonic Monstrosity ..on this tune I Cowboy Up

I'm playing my #1 Telecaster over this months TDPRI August backing track …
the original backing track was a little slow for me so I sped it up and then played over it at the new tempo ….

My Lead solo was played in real time in one take straight through the song.
(I don't use the comp feature ever….so for all I know it could of been take 12 or take 200,047)

When I do this type of thing I'm just going for a mood ...I'm looking to have fun and feature my guitar playing ….

the backing track I used was put up on the telecaster forum as a friendly little track for folks to play over and post
which i did btw…also I have posted the link to the bt below my version of the tune …have fun w it …if you happen to play over it

I would call this clip a practice session , i left everything as I played it ...unedited … i know the mix leaves a lot to be desired...

thanks in advance ,
I hope someone enjoys the playing

Kenny, don't fear the comp, use the tools man! That Les Paul sounds pretty good, a couple of timing anomolies, but better than I could do. Had a little Allman Bros feel in a few parts.

    Hi John ,
sure , there are all sorts of things going on here …suspious timing , artifacts from having sped up the bt…flubbed notes
the list is endless ….i did this thing just to let off a little steam and have some fun .
the first real band i was ever in played a lot of Allman Bros …yeah I would love to hang w them cats
it's funny you said don't fear the comp . I have a Jazz tune I was working on where I started using the comp...
as far as a cool tool goes …no doubt it offers a lot ….I have a ways to go before I feel comfortable enough to use it...

thanks for giving this a listen

Yeah, there are some minor imperfections in there. mostly timing from what I could hear.   I only wish I could play like that in one take and have way less imperfections than not.

Nice and fluid, Kenny.  And I like the way you've switched up from section to section.

Yes , I feel I've got a lot to be grateful for when it comes to playing the guitar .

    Cowboy jazz?
You really got that twang thang goin on here.
I don't think I could pull that out of my humbuckers.
One thing that always comes through in your playing is that you are really enjoying it.
Yeah, the track is a little rough, but it's honest, and has an undeniable fun factor.

Well Kenny, A few flaws I happen to have many, but you did a great thing here with this piece and I like it. So, keep at it and kick in that other 70 - 80 % of your talent that Lynn thinks you may have left off on this one, and who knows, you could go over the top of the charts. Very nice cowboy'in around.

    Hi Robert,
it's real good to see you here

Cowboy Jazz , oh yeah , quite a few of the old school country players actually have a very solid playing background when it comes to  Swing and pre Bebop Jazz…
Country Guitarist Hank Garland could hang with the best Jazz Guitarists of any era

Hank Garland ..All The Things You Are
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RM1wOVP0oac

another country  guitarist I love is Grady Martin
what Grady Martin played on a nylon string for Marty Robbins song El Paso was phenomenal

Here's Grady playing his own version of El Paso ….
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3AHJwqKUV0k

also if you get a chance give Marty's El Paso a listen

as far as humbuckers go ,
you can get in the same type of territory when playing out of a Fender tube amp clean w a Les Paul on the treble pick up …
it has a little more beef in the mids and if you play closer to the bridge you can get a pretty good Twang happening once you throw a compressor in front end of it , an MXR Dyna Comp is a good choice …then you are good to go ...

as we all know this clip is Rough …somebody posted a backing track …everybody in the thread posted a version of their playing over it …the whole thing was a lot of fun for everybody who posted their versions

I'm very happy people have enjoyed this side of my playing on this …

    Hi John ,
When I played on this it was for giggles and grins ..this clip was for an online Telecaster forum where the guys were pretty much keeping it light …
you know , now that I have had some time to live with this for a bit I almost sort of wished that I had overdubbed and tightened up a few sections….
it is very possible that I might want to approach the person who created the backing track and find out if it's OK for me to hit it with my absolute best playing and use his backing track for something other that the original thread

thank you for the song listen and encouragement

No way, I was sure I commented on this? Or perhaps I heard it and thought I commented? Or maybe I commented, and it was obscene and the moderator deleted the comment? The later is probably the most likely...

Nice chicken picken... The sound of that Les Paul is "unmistakable." A few timing anomalies, but I certainly couldn't pull it off, although I was brought up on charges this one time for trying to do so? But the evidence wouldn't stand up in court... But that's another story for another forum.

Would love to hear you comp one and play it to a tic track. Diagram it first, practice it, and then perfect it :-) You have so much raw talent.

    Thanks Freddy
I do think that it sort of odd that I would spend most of my time learning how to play the guitar in the styles of Jazz , Rock , Blues and a hint of classical . Then a  funny thing happens ,  nobody ever asks me to play Wes,   Clapton or Page...
once anybody I've ever gigged with found out that I played Country ..they would end up wanting me to play in that style ….
it's a good thing for me ….the bulk of most of the paying gigs I ever had when I played in clubs involved me getting my Twang on….I honestly do enjoy playing that way with that type of sound ...

    once again thank you

    Hello Tim ,
Yes , my whole guitar part was done in one pass. all i did was to practice along with the track for about a half hour and then record my guitar part straight up w no editing or punch ins ...
I was very much on the fence because I was toying around with the idea of doing a u tube video ..
once i started having fun  , I didn't want to set up all the jazz thats involved in doing a vid ….
it is probably a good thing …the other guys on the other forum were pretty much all about keeping it lite
thank you for leaving the positive comment  i think i might need to sign in to soundcloud first before I start  listening to posted tunes from this forum … I do like a lot of what I hear …got to break the laziness ...

A few timing anomalies, but I certainly couldn't pull it off, although I was brought up on charges this one time for trying to do so? But the evidence wouldn't stand up in court... But that's another story for another forum.

Would love to hear you comp one and play it to a tic track. Diagram it first, practice it, and then perfect it :-) You have so much raw talent.

    You Again  just kidding ..

    Hello Robbie ,

Believe it or Not , I Honestly do get you

You Know, I spent my whole life banging my head up against the music stand trying to play E=MC2 on the guitar .
Eventually I had to find something that works for me ...
I found through trial and error that creating back stories and letting my imagination loose happens to be a very creative tool I use all the time to keep the juices flowing in my playing the guitar and music ...

I always like to create a story in my mind that involves a cast of crazy musical characters …like a cartoon almost ..

by the time I was ready to post this song , my back story was about a Lil Red Rooster that was having somewhat of an identity crisis…

The Lil Red Rooster  pretty much had his way and the run of the chicken coup , he even took a liking to parading around like a Peacock every once and a while . It turns out that his favorite hen wasn't paying a whole lot of attention to his antics so the Lil Red Rooster decided to throw down a challenge to prove himself and win her affection…
What he did was to challenge the biggest baddest Hawk in the Sky to a duel of Country Guitar Chicken Picking ...
The only rule was ….winner takes all and gets to wear the crown of being The Twang King
Anyway , to make a long story short The Lil Red Rooster out Twanged the Hawk .
Since it was winner take all,
The Lil Red Rooster decided to take all his winnings and make a pillow out of Hawk feathers for his favorite hen

I kid you not Bro …thats a big part of the back story on this one

Oh Yeah , Life is Good .
The internet is nothing more than a glorified real time cartoon we all star in.
