Authentic Scottish Bagpipes.
Hello, Can anyone advise me if there is a programme in Sonar X1 producer, that would give me an authentic scottish bagpipe sound. Thanks.

The TTS-1 has a bagpipe patch that is ok. Keep in mind if you want a real authentic Scottish bagpipe sound, you have to record the drones as well as the chanter pipe. The TTS-1 sample has the drones below middle C and the chanter from middle C on up. Just having a good sound is just a start, you also need to emulate the playing technique.

Thank you. I assume that both the above are compatible with sonar x1?

16brae Thank you. I assume that both the above are compatible with sonar x1? You'd need to have Kontakt first (which you can insert as a VSTi instrument in X1).

Yup...it's weird...I just got an email from Wavesfactory a few minutes ago alerting me to the new Bagpipes Instrument Library...and then I come upstairs to see someone needs such a thing. Go get ya some.

Different reed sound, but since everyone is looking at this, anyone know where I can find a Melodica sample? I started another thread on that but didn't get any feedback. Melodica is really similar to a harmonica sound, but not the same.

Melodica samples? Don't know if it's any good or not (haven't tried it myself) but there's this - http://christoph-hart.com/volker/ Of course, you could always just buy a melodica - they're not that expensive and are pretty easy to play. This might be your best be in the end. I play free reed instruments (diatonic accordions, harmonica) and I've yet to hear a sample of any of the free reed instruments that comes close. Even when the sample isn't named e.g. concertina but is clearly a piano accordion (in guitar terms, think of something claiming to be a Les Paul into a Boogie Rectifier stack but is actually a Strat into a Fender Twin), the instrument sampled always sounds like it's the cheapest and nastiest they could find. Then they gave it to someone who couldn't play it........ :-/

The guy at the link sells melodicas, not samples, right? I used to have a couple of melodicas long ago. I am not adverse to buying one and playing it: just cool to have samples that you can do a lot of stuff with. Thanks for passing this on!

The guy at the link sells melodicas, not samples, right? No. According to it's helpfile it's a melodica emulator/samples that runs in Kontakt.

I made the same mistake as you when I first saw that site. I found it via Google a while ago and had to look at it for a while before I realised it wasn't just a site about playing melodicas or something. An example of how to make a good, clear, to the point website it isn't. For some reason although all the information's there it doesn't catch the eye at all. As I said, I've not tried it as I don't have Kontakt and I've plenty of free reed instruments to hand anyway.

As a piper I find the Kontakt and the Wavesfactory samples not great. To try to make them "realistic" they have notes that are deliberately out of tune. A piper, both highland and Uileann, work very hard to make sure the chanter reeds are in tune. Kinda drives me crazy! That said, the Uileann pipes samples from Kontakt have decent timbre. Because the use of the bag allows for continuous airflow over the reeds all notes are chopped and embellished by very complex and difficult ornamentation and technique. Therefore, it is nearly impossible to replicate the true nature of pipes using a sampler. For background-y stuff it should be passable but if they're more upfront you should find a piper!!
