Automation Question? Help me out!

Here's my question....  If I have a track, say a bassline or a guitar lead track that I notice drops 2db during a particular phrase (due to softer playing or whatever other factor) and I want to automate that up.... then back down at the end of the phrase I understand how to do that.  but, if later on I find I need that whole track to be up (or down) 3-4 db I have to manually adjust the automation at each node to make it happen.  Is there a way (or some menu setting) that will allow the automation to move up an down globally across the track if I move the fader?

This would make it alot easier to able to set up the automation earlier on in my workflow than having to wait and remember to do it last as I finish mixing.

Yeah Chuck....press O (letter O not zero) on your keyboard which sends Sonar into offset mode. Anything you touch there will not mess with your automation. You'll see a little + sign next to your volume, pan sends etc. This will allow you to adjust the entire track without messing up any automation. Just remember to press O again as soon as you're done. :) Hope this helps.

Great question, awesome answer! I had been redoing the automation for the track whenever that happened. Thanks guys.

Another easy way to do this if you're using X1 is with the envelope active in the edit filter, click and drag anywhere toward the top of the clip. Moves the whole envelope.

The "O"ffset function has been in Sonar versions for as long as I can remember.

Yet another reason I really advocate reading the manual like a good book to all users.   There are many things users don't know about (as evidenced here on the forum) that are excellent 'little' features.

This is usually true of all major hosts such as Sonar, Studio One, Live, Reaper, Cuebase, etc.   MANY features users simply don't know about or realize - which is somewhat unfortunate - just because they don't peruse the manual.

So I'm advocating again:   RTFM  LOL

(note:  don't take this TOO seriously -- as we all know no one actually RTFM's much these days)  ;)

RTFM is all too true! I must admit though Billy...I miss the big bible type books we used to get with Sonar. They were great reading material when you were "indisposed of". LOL! Ain't no way I'm printing out that PDF! LMAO!! But seriously, I think that's one of the reasons why I don't read the manuals much anymore unless I need to look for something. But back in the Cake bible days...I'd be able to read it from front to back over time and make it a point to try and learn something new each day. These days with everything bein so fast paced and one day running into the next...well, potty breaks can't last more than 5 minutes. Hahaha!

Even easier, as long as you don't have a compressor on the track, is to use the Trim/Gain slider to bring the whole track up or down. I prefer this over offset mode, which I find confusing because it hides the original values.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

    +1.

And, it's why I use Busses a lot so I can change the upstream without a direct hit on any compressor (ie, not using one on the track insert).

But, I also do a lot of compression so the offset mode - and even better the FBB mentioned mode - is what I end up doing more often anyway.

Heh, I actually liked the big manual approach too.

But these days I just take my tablet to the 'indisposed' area and read the PDF there anyway LOL.

I use the gain knob and also I will Buss the track and use the buss fader to tweek the entire track level.

Another option..... bounce the track to a new track using "what you hear" preset, and the new track has all the volume changes but not the envelope..... then simply turn it up or down.

Perhaps in these days of PDFs that should be STFM (the S = Search) and that is a real easy(ish) option.

The only trouble with offset mode is as bitflipper mentioned there's no obvious indication that something is changed in offset mode, so several months later when I go  back to a mix I can't work out why I've got a real quiet or silent track/buss. Then of course several hours of cursing and head scratching later it's  doh..... or is it only me that does that?

This won't help you with a track you've already automated, but have you tried using a clip gain envelope to change the level where needed? This approach lets you use track faders and track automation independent of any tweaking you've done on the clips.

FBB, can you explain the "no obvious indication that something is changed" thing for me please? On my end, if I don't touch anything in offset mode, it stays at 0 with a + sign. If I touch something, the 0 becomes a value letting me know something was touched. Am I missing something here? LOL! :)

Hi again Danny. No, you're right but when I'm out of offset mode I don't see the +.

Of course if I switched and checked I would see it but I never remember until I've spent a while wondering what's going on.

Hahaha, ok now I see what you mean. :) Yeah I can see how that could be a pain in the butt. I try not to go into O mode often...and when I do, I make sure I get right out of it as to not make any changes by accident. :)
