Automation removal...?

I'm having a minor problem which I hope someone here has come across.  And solved!

I am using a midi file which was written by someone else and I want to doctor it - new volumes, automation lanes, different instruments.  I can go into Sonar Producer X2 and open the file and change any/all of these things, but as soon as I rewind the file and hit 'play', everything reverts to the settings the file had when I got it.

I have removed all of the non-notes from the event list for all tracks, but that didn't help any.  I have also removed all of the automations which (can be made to) appear in the track view.  I have deleted (using the minus sign) or adjusted the extant automations, but they all reappear when I start the song again.  The tracks refuse to keep volume changes, instrument settings, and automations I put on them.  The file refuses to keep pretty much anything I do to it.

I can make all of the adjustments I would like to as long as the track is playing (except for one bass line, which won't change the volume I hear no matter what the volume slider is set to).

The tracks are all played back through the TTS-1, which is what I've been using for years.  I have hundreds of files I've done this to, but I can't seem to fix this one.

What am I missing?

Help!

Thanks...!

Just spitballin' (I am not familiar with this type of thing)...

How about cloning the track then in the Clone dialog unchecking everything except the Events?

    Or...

Maybe you could create a new blank MIDI track, copy the notes and paste them into the new track (using Copy/Paste Special if a plain Copy/Paste hangs on to all the controllers and other gunk).

Just some things I would try but I'm sure there are better ways.

What version of Sonar are you running?
A thought: is the track frozen?
The clone track idea is a good one...

All music was recorded and all in Sonar.

Does the event list help with the bass volume other than using slider in mixer?..resetting the values of the volume in that might help?
And resetting midi data to original settings, may be a program change instruction...not sure these days but was that part of channel 1?...if i remember correctly.

...Also check the properties of the midi file and
make sure it's not checked read-only.

I had exactly the same problem Here's the fix from my earlier solution from my original post 'How to overide/cancel General Midi instrument assignments SOLVED See last post'

hey fred, i took a look at the guts of the midi file using a hex editor and all of the program change info is there. the problem seems to be that their timestamps are 00 which puts them right at the start of the file. it appears sonar does not display these events at the beginning of the file in event manager for some reason, though it does set the instruments In the patch selector in the midi file. If you select a track, open track inspector and change the patch using the <P>atch dropdown right above the fader and save the file it retains the new data but it still doesn't show up in the event inspector. my feeling is it was thought of as redundant in the first place to display it when you can already see and change It
